The deadline for voter registration is just a few days away for those Lincolnton residents planning to participate in the Nov. 5 municipal election.
Unregistered voters have until 5 p.m. Friday to sign up.
Absentee voting by mail got underway at the end of last week, with one-stop voting scheduled to begin Oct. 17.
On the ballot for the Lincolnton election is the mayoral race and the Ward I and Ward III seats on the City Council.
Incumbent Mayor John Gilleland, a Republican first elected to the post in 2009, is seeking a third two-year term and is unopposed for the job.
Meanwhile, incumbent Republican Devin Rhyne will be challenged by Democrat Mary Frances White, owner of Ebony & White’s Funeral Service, for the Ward I seat.
Two newcomers to the City Council will contend for the Ward III seat. Democrat Martin Eaddy and Republican Jerry “Jay” Thomas are seeking the seat currently occupied by Democrat Carroll Heavner, first elected to the council in 1971 and the longest-standing elected official in Lincolnton’s history. He has represented Ward III since 1993 and was also the mayor of Lincolnton from 1982 until 1987.
Members of the council are elected to four-year terms at large but are required to file for election by ward.
