Family opens new bakery in Lincolnton

A family of good cooks recently set up shop on East Main Street in downtown Lincolnton.

Southern Bakers Boutique, which opened its doors on Aug. 26, is owned and operated by Ann and Kenneth Davis, as well as Ann’s sister, Susie Wilson.

Together, the trio stocks their display cases with various homemade sweet treats like cakes, cupcakes, pies, brownies, donuts, cinnamon rolls and breads, a selection that will likely vary depending on the season.

Kenneth Davis, originally from Savannah, Ga., said he has been baking for his family for more than 20 years. He and Ann, a native of Lawndale, live in Stanley. The couple initially had hoped to open a restaurant but decided that it made more sense to stick to what they know best.

They also figured it might be easier, with both having day jobs. Kenneth works as a truck driver for UPS Freight, and Ann, previously a teacher for many years, is a media specialist for Pleasant Ridge Elementary School in Gastonia. Wilson, meanwhile, bakes for some convenience stores in Shelby and Lawndale.

Ann, who described herself as the “people and paperwork” person for the business, took charge of the permitting and licensing process a few months ago. The building, located at 230 E. Main St., also needed some floor work and painting done.

She considers her husband and sister the real bakers of the operation. While Ann’s specialty is bread, something she’s been making for about three years, she also has another important role in the business.

“They enjoy (cooking) — I enjoy sampling everything,” she joked.

Their decision to open the bakery in Lincolnton was by chance. After driving through town on their way to Wilson’s for dinner one night, they realized it would be the right fit.

“We couldn’t have asked for a better spot,” Kenneth said.

He’s already gearing up for the holiday season, with plans to debut a fruitcake soon. The bakery also accepts orders for birthdays and other special occasions.

Should the opportunity arise, they may expand down the road.

“If it goes well, then next year, we might do a little more,” Ann said.

Lincolnton’s hospitality has made their experience so far a positive one.

“The people are just excellent in Lincolnton,” Kenneth said.

Ann echoed those sentiments, noting that they have been made to feel quite welcome.

“I have met nothing but good people,” she added.

Southern Bakers Boutique is open Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and on Wednesdays from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. It is closed on weekends.
