NEWTON –– West Lincoln keeps rolling along.
The Rebels used another balanced rushing game and capitalized on three Fred T. Foard turnovers to win 38-12 on Friday and improve to 4-0 on the year.
Daniel Davila ran for 85 yards and a score, Tracy Messer had 72 yards and three TDs and Daniel Schesny returned his second kickoff for a TD this season to keep West Lincoln undefeated –– the only such team in Lincoln County –– heading into this week’s open date and league play beginning Sept. 27.
Messer scored on a 57-yard run 45 seconds into the game, then added a 9-yard run four minutes later for the early lead. Schesny’s 77-yard kickoff return with 2:01 left in the opening quarter gave the Rebels a 21-3 lead after one quarter.
Messer scored on a 2-yard run in the second quarter for a 28-3 halftime lead.
Davila scored from a yard out in the third quarter and Ivan Cavillo nailed a 29-yard field goal with 1:54 to play.
West Lincoln had a season-best 108 yards passing –– 56 from Noah Marsh on one pass to Tyrenn McClendon. It also had a season-high 145 penalty yards.
Fred T. Foard got a TD from Jacob Schmidt, a 27-yard field goal from Ryan Campbell and a safety when a blocked punt was recovered by the Rebels in the end zone.
A week after rushing for 520 yards, the Rebels gained 233 on the ground in this one. Their defense, which had the third-best defense in the Southern District 7 Athletic 2A Conference at 256.6 yards allowed per game going in, gave up 226 yards –– 105 rushing –– to Fred T. Foard (0-4).
