William Eric Gribbins

William Eric Gribbins, age 43, of 21A Woodmont Circle in Lincolnton, died on Thursday, September 5, 2013.

A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. on Sunday, September 8, 2013 at Long Shoals Baptist Church with Rev. Ken Gibson officiating.  The family will receive friends from 2 p.m. until 2:45 p.m. prior to the service at the church.

Eric was born September 30, 1969 in Lincoln County to William Ronald and the late Margaret Olive Robinson Gribbins.  He worked as a mechanic.

He is survived by his father, William Gribbins and stepmother Isabel of Lincolnton; two brothers, Jason Gribbins and wife Crystal of Concord and Scott Gribbins and wife Angela of Denver; six nieces and nephews.

Memorials may be made to Hospice of Lincoln County, 107 N. Cedar Street, Lincolnton, NC 28092.

David Preston Hefner

David Preston Hefner, 82, of Vale passed away Wednesday, September 4, 2013 at Brian Center in Lincolnton.

Mr. Hefner was born November 10, 1930 in Catawba County to the late Martin Preston Hefner and Nellie Starnes Hefner. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his wife, Sallie Ann Hefner; a daughter, Sallie Louise Hefner; two sisters, Mary Ann Carroll and Jane Thorneburg.

He served in the U.S. Army, was a member of Philadelphia Baptist Church and was retired from Hickory Chair Company.

Survivors include two sons, Preston Hefner and wife Amy of Lincolnton and Jim Hefner of Vale; daughter, Alice Cole of Lake City, Fla.; five grandchildren, Dawn Malonney, Jimmy Hefner Jr., Lisa Poarch, Mitchell Higdon and Dalton Hefner; and six great grandchildren.

The funeral service will be held on Saturday, September 7, 2013 at 2 p.m. at Philadelphia Baptist Church with the Rev. Doyle Holder, Rev. Kenneth Bryant and Rev. Larry Blakely officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends at the church from 12:30 p.m. until 2 p.m. prior to the service at the church.

Pallbearers will be Jimmy Hefner Jr., Travis Poarch, Danny Hildebran, Brian Hildebran, Dennis Brown and Dale Brittian.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Philadelphia Baptist Church, 7654 George Hildebran School Rd., Connelly Springs 28612.

Emily Roach Howard

CHARLOTTE — Emily Roach Howard, age 75, of Charlotte, died on Wednesday, September 4, 2013.

Her funeral service will be 3 p.m. on Sunday, September 8, 2013 at Alexis Baptist Church, Alexis, with Rev. Dr. Sandy Marks and Rev. Scott Jenkins officiating.  Burial will follow in the church cemetery.  The family will receive friends from 1 p.m. until 2:45 p.m. prior to the service at the church.

Mrs. Howard was born September 5, 1937 in Lincoln County to the late Henry Lee and Addie Lynch Roach. In addition to her parents, she was also preceded in death by a brother, Henry Lee Roach Jr. and a sister, Joyce Roach Avery. She was a wonderful wife, mother, sister and grandmother.

She is survived by her husband of 54 years, Max E. Howard of the home; one son, Max “Ed” Howard Jr. and wife Kathy of Aiken, S.C.; daughter, Kimberly Howard Latham and husband Steve of Waxhaw; three grandchildren, Edward Lee Viktor Howard of Aiken, S.C.; Emily Kaitlyn Latham and Samuel McCotter Latham, both of Waxhaw; two brothers, Tom Roach and Bill Roach, both of Lincolnton; four sisters, Linda Wilkinson, Martha Sigmon, Sandra Huffstetler, and Charlotte Lynch, all of Lincolnton; and many much loved nieces and nephews.

Memorials may be made to Alexis Baptist Church, 118 Alexis Church Road, Alexis, NC  28006, or the charity of one’s choice.

The family would like to give a special thanks to Novant Hospice and Palliative Care of Charlotte.

James ‘Jim’ Henry Leatherman

James “Jim” Henry Leatherman, age 86, died peacefully on September 5, 2013. He was a lifelong resident of Lincolnton.  He was a local barber from 1948 until 2012, a total of 64 years.

His funeral service will be 2 p.m. on Saturday, September 7, 2013 in the Warlick Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Tommy Conder and Rev. Malcolm Lerch officiating.  Burial will follow in Hollybrook Cemetery. The family will receive friends from noon until 1:45 p.m. prior to the service at the funeral home.

Jim was a WWII Army veteran T5 Co.M 2nd Regt.  He traveled aboard the USS General Wm. Weigel to the invasion of Japan.

James was preceded in death by his loving wife of 60 years, Helen Maxine Martin Leatherman; son, Larry James Leatherman; parents, Lawrence F. Leatherman and Annie White Leatherman; brothers, John Lethermon of Gastonia and William Leatherman of Lincolnton.

He is survived by daughter, Mary Ann Froneberger and husband Gary of Lincolnton; daughter-in-law, Diane D. Leatherman of Lincolnton; granddaughter, Marie Schoen and husband Joe Schoen of Frisco, Tex.; two great-grandchildren, Sydney and Carson: one brother, Charles “Bud” Leatherman of West Palm Beach, Fla.; two sisters, Nancy Leatherman Davis and Louise Leatherman Barkley of Lincolnton; niece, Linda B. Hoyle; and a number of nieces and nephews.

Jim was a faithful member of McKendree Church, the American Legion, “Last Man’s Club” of WWII veterans of which he was the commander, and Sons of the Confederate Veterans.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to McKendree United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 426, Lincolnton, NC 28093.

Jaime McConnell

ROCK HILL — Mr. Jamie Kent McConnell, 54, loving husband, father and “PaPa” went home to his Savior on Monday, September 2, 2013.

Jamie is survived by his wife of almost 28 years, Frankie Miller McConnell; son and daughter-in-law, Josh and Elke; and his daughter and son-in-law, Heather and Tim; parents, Grady and Alice McConnell; sister, Jeanene; niece, Rachel; and the loves of his life, his grandchildren, Ivy, Karly, Braden and Loflin. He was preceded in death by his precious granddaughter, Addie Kent.

Funeral services will be 2 p.m. today at First Baptist Church with Reverend Steve Hogg officiating. Burial will follow in Forest Hills Cemetery.

The family received friends Thursday, September 5, 2013 from 6 p.m. until 7:30 p.m. at Greene Funeral Home Northwest Chapel, 2133 Ebenezer Road, Rock Hill, SC 29732 and other times at the home.

The family suggests memorials be made to The American Heart Association, 310-B Bennett Center Drive, Greer, SC 29650 or to St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital Tribute Program, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105-1942.

Robert “Bob” Edward Killian, 86, of Kingwood, Tex., formerly of Lincolnton, died August 19, 2013.

Funeral services were Saturday, August 31, 2013 at 2 p.m. at Kingwood Funeral Home.

Edna Buchanan Turner Gilliland

Edna Mae Buchanan Turner Gilliland, 84, of Connelly Springs died September 2, 2013.

A graveside service was held on Wednesday, September 4, 2013 at 11 a.m. at Fairview Baptist Church, Newton. A memorial service was held on Wednesday at 2:30 p.m. at Heritage Baptist Church, Morganton. The family received friends on Wednesday from 1:30 p.m. until 2:30 p.m. at Heritage Baptist Church, Morganton prior to the service.

Burke Mortuary, Newton served the Gilliland family.

 

Stacy Threadgill IV

Stacy Threadgill IV, 41, of Maiden died September 1, 2013.

Memorial viewing and service will be held Monday, September 9, 2013 at Coulter’s Grove AME Zion Church at 4 p.m. Interment will be in the church cemetery.
