DENVER –– A week after accounting for 297 yards and five touchdowns in his varsity quarterback debut and three days after receiving a scholarship offer from North Carolina, all eyes were on sophomore quarterback Chazz Surratt Friday as he led East Lincoln into its second game of the season.
In the end, Surratt enjoyed quite the encore performance, completing 24 of 34 passes for 219 yards and three touchdowns and rushing for another 52 yards and two scores as the Mustangs blew past the Charlotte Q Foundation 47-6 at home.
“We just wanted to come out and work on a few things,” East Lincoln coach Mike Byus said. “And it’s 40 to zip, so we just wanted to come out and obviously you get into a game like that and your first priority is those are kids on the other sideline, so you don’t want to embarrass them.
“At the same time, you’ve got to get ready to play when you start getting into these opponents where you’re going to have to play four-quarter games, so we wanted to come out in the second half just like it was any other game and we needed to be prepared to play right off the bat.”
On the opening drive of the game, East Lincoln (2-0) marched 71 yards in just under 3 1/2 minutes, with Surratt giving the Mustangs an early lead thanks to a 23-yard TD scamper on fourth-and-4.
After adding two points via a safety in the waning minutes of the first quarter, East Lincoln really kicked it into high gear in the second, adding four more TDs and a field goal.
Following a 25-yard TD run by Surratt with 9:10 remaining, the Mustangs turned the Q Foundation over on downs and immediately got another score when Surratt found Damisho Finandis in the end zone for a 43-yard TD strike.
East Lincoln made it three TDs on three second-quarter possessions on its next drive when Surratt hooked up with younger brother Sage for a 30-yard TD pass, while its defense helped it find paydirt for the final time in the first half when Billy Misenheimer intercepted a pass and returned it 75 yards for a score.
The Mustangs weren’t content with that, though, as Blake Strupp kicked one through the uprights from 37 yards out to send them into the half with a 40-0 advantage.
After a scoreless third quarter, each team scored on its first possession of the final period, with Damarius Valentine catching a 10-yard pass from Surratt for East Lincoln’s final score and the Fighting Falcons (0-1) preventing the shutout thanks to an 8-yard TD run by Caleb McClogin with 10:51 remaining.
“We’ve been working hard on being balanced and making sure that whether we’re a little short on the run side or the pass side, we’ve just got to balance that out,” Byus added. “That’s always our goal is to be balanced.”
Finandis caught seven passes for 100 yards to lead the Mustangs, while Valentine had 15 carries for 69 yards and Strupp was 6-for-6 on extra-point attempts.
The Q Foundation was led by Darryl Wallace, who had four catches for 87 yards, while Jahmauq Watts was its leading rusher with 32 yards on seven carries.
The Mustangs finished with 372 yards of offense compared to 137 for the Falcons.
East Lincoln hosts North Lincoln on Friday.
