Trudy Elaine Smith Avery

Trudy Elaine Smith Avery, age 59, of 1947 Southside Road in Lincolnton, died on Sunday, August 18, 2013.

Her funeral service will be 3 p.m. today at Southside Baptist Church with Rev. Leland Stephens and Rev. Charles Ingle officiating.  Burial will follow in the church cemetery.  The body will lie in state for one hour prior to the service.

Mrs. Avery was born February 26, 1954 in Catawba County to the late Frances H. and Ann Hoover Smith.  She worked in retail and wholesale.

She is survived by her husband, Victor Avery of the home; one son, Bryan V. Avery of Lincolnton; and one grandson, Frank Avery.

Clarice ‘Jean’ Rudisill Carpenter

Clarice “Jean” Rudisill Carpenter, age 79, of 192 Lake Sylvia Road in Lincolnton, died Saturday, August 17, 2013.

Services will be private.

Mrs. Carpenter was born June 9, 1934 in Lincoln County to the late Gaston Paul and Lillian Viney Sain Rudisill.  In addition to her parents, she was also preceded in death by her husband, Ralph Carpenter.  Mrs. Carpenter worked in manufacturing.

She is survived by a daughter, Julie Carpenter Dill of Lincolnton; three sisters, Marilyn Auton, Earlene Johnson, and Joyce Icard, all of Lincolnton; two grandchildren, Clarissa Dill and Larry Deal Jr.; and one great-granddaughter, Erika Hudson.

Edward G. Gratzer

Edward G. Gratzer, 93, died peacefully at home in Denver, in the presence of family on August 17, 2013.

He was born in Syracuse, New York, attended Syracuse University, served in the United States Army throughout World War II, and then married his hometown sweetheart, Margaret, his wife of 65 years. Edward retired from his career at Crucible Steel/Colt Industries and they settled in the lakeshore golf course community of Heber Springs, Arkansas.

Edward was preceded in death by his wife, Margaret, in 2009. He was also preceded in death by his first son, Edward N. Gratzer (wife, Donna), and is survived by his two sons, Tim (wife, Cynthia) and Travis (wife, Shanna) and their families, which include four great-grandchildren: Garek, Coby, Ella, and Chloe. Edward is also survived by his three other sons: Alan Gratzer, his wife, Nancy, and their children, Abby, Ryan, Mandy, and foster-son, Aaron. Abby and her husband, Corey, also have two great-grandchildren of Edward’s, Elliot and Oliver. Son, Steve Gratzer, lives in Texas with his wife, Kelly, and has two children, Haley and Christian. And, Edward’s son, Gary Gratzer, resides in Denver with his wife, Andrea, and their son, Maxwell.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to East Lincoln Christian Ministries Home Meals Program, PO Box 421, Denver, NC, 28037. East Lincoln Christian Ministries provides home meals, clothing, housewares, and more, to those in need. Also, memorials may be made to Palliative Care Center & Hospice of Catawba Valley, 3975 Robinson Rd., Newton, NC, 28658, as they assisted in the comfortable care of Edward and the family is very grateful for their service.

A private memorial service schedule for Edward G. Gratzer is pending and an announcement will be made at the appropriate time.

Dorothy Patricia Gurdak

Dorothy Patricia Gurdak, 86, of Denver passed away on Friday, August 16, 2013 at the Huntersville Oaks. Born on June 7, 1927 in Paterson, N.J., she was the daughter of the late Frank and Hermine Berger Mungenast.

Mrs. Gurdak loved people. This is why she loved to volunteer. She volunteered at numerous church activities through the years in both New Jersey and later in Denver. She was a church greeter at Holy Spirit RC Church in Denver and volunteered at East Lincoln Christian Ministries. She volunteered to help people in nursing homes.

Mrs. Gurdak loved music and dancing. She loved a good Polka especially when it was played by her late husband, Myron E. Gurdak on his accordion. Many say that Mrs. Gurdak was the ‘life of the party.’ For many, Mrs. Gurdak was life itself.

Mrs. Gurdak is survived by her children, Nancy Bukowski, Edward F. Gurdak, Robert G. Gurdak and Ronald M. Gurdak; six grandchildren; and sister, Lillian Drexler.

The family would like to thank Holy Spirit RC Church for its prayers and support, St. Mark’s RC Church Eldercare Ministry (Huntersville) for ‘adopting’ Mrs. Gurdak while she resided at the Huntersville Oaks, to the Huntersville Oaks and Hospice and Palliative Care of Lake Norman for assisting in taking care of Mrs. Gurdak’s medical needs and making her comfortable in her last days.

A Funeral Mass will be celebrated for Mrs. Gurdak at 1 p.m. on Thursday, August 22, 2013 at Holy Spirit RC Church, 537 North Highway 16, Denver, NC 28037. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the Funeral Mass at the church.

In lieu of flowers, donations to Holy Spirit RC Church would be deeply appreciated.

Stella Hatfield Lane

Stella Hatfield Lane, now absent in body but present with the Lord, passed from this world into her eternal home on August 20, 2013. Stella was a devout prayer warrior and committed follower of Jesus Christ and left a legacy of His love and light throughout her 89 years of life.

Her funeral service will be 3 p.m. on Friday, August 23, 2013 at Grace Baptist Church with Rev. Bobby Jones officiating. Burial will follow in Forest Lawn Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 2 p.m. until 2:45 p.m. prior to the service at the church.

Stella was born July 17, 1924 in Valley Creek, Tenn. to the late John and Millie Lawson Hatfield. In addition to her parents, she was also preceded in death by her husband, George Washington Lane.

Stella loved and cared for her family and others, receiving cards and letters from those whom she had stayed with and ministered to even in her elder age. Her presence always left an impact because of the love and good deeds she showered everyone with. Stella loved growing vegetables and flowers, quilting, playing games with her grandchildren, doing for others, reading God’s Word, and listening to gospel music and preaching.

Stella is survived by her daughter, Lois Stone and husband Keith of Lincolnton; six grandchildren, Melissa Haas, Jimmy Longmire, Melynda Ball, Brian Stone, Matthew Stone, and Doug Stone; 13 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.

Marjorie Jeanne Livingston Lightsey

Marjorie Jeanne Livingston Lightsey, age 64, of 330 D Street in Lincolnton, died on Monday, August 19, 2013.

No services are planned at this time.

Mrs. Lightsey was born May 28, 1949 in Albany, N.Y to the late Francis and Marjorie Livingston.  In addition to her parents, she was also preceded in death by her husband, George Robert Lightsey.

She is survived by two sons, John McCarthy and wife Kristie of Indian Trail and Buddy McCarthy and wife Brianna of Huntersville; two daughters, Shannon Samuels of Lincolnton and Cheryl Pruitt of Gastonia; and 11 grandchildren.

Nellie Ruth McAlister Shuford

Nellie Ruth McAlister Shuford, age 91, of 2735 E. Highway 150 in Lincolnton, died on Monday, August 19, 2013.

A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. today at Forest Lawn Cemetery in Lincolnton with Rev. Earlynne Bartley officiating. The family received friends from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. Tuesday, August 20, 2013 at Warlick Funeral Home.

Mrs. Shuford was born September 17, 1921 in Lincoln County to the late William Thomas and Dezzie Lawing McAlister. She was also preceded in death by her husband, J. Fred Shuford.  Mrs. Shuford worked in daycare.

She is survived by two daughters, Doris Shuford Little and husband Edward of Lincolnton, and Alice Shuford Chance and husband Don of Lincolnton; three grandchildren, Jennifer Little and fiancé Randall Johnson, Andrew Chance and fiancée Tera Hayes, Thomas Chance and wife Chalee; one great-granddaughter, Mylah Chance.

Memorials may be made to Hospice of Lincoln County, 107 N. Cedar Street, Lincolnton, NC 28092 or to the Charity of One’s Choice.

Bobby Joe Johnson

Bobby Joe Johnson, 77, of Connelly Springs died August 18, 2013.

A memorial service will be held today at 2 p.m. in the Chapel of Heritage Funeral Service. The family will receive friends immediately following the service on Wednesday at Heritage Funeral Service, Valdese.

Daniel Edward Sanford

Daniel Edward Sanford, 35, of Conover died August 16, 2013.

A visitation will be held on August 22, 2013 from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. at The Good Samaritan Funeral Home, Denver.
