Football scrimmages begin Saturday

Area football teams have been lining up against themselves since Wednesday.
They’ll get to lineup against someone else on Saturday.
Per the NCHSAA, teams can hold their first scrimmage beginning Saturday and three of the county’s four teams will be in action.
East Lincoln will participate in the eight-team Fellowship of Christian Athletes Kickoff Jamboree at Wingate University, Lincolnton will host the four-team Lincoln County Jamboree and North Lincoln will host Hunter Huss.
West Lincoln’s first scrimmage will be on Tuesday at North Gaston.
The Mustangs, defending state 2A champions, join Monroe High, Monroe Central Academy, Lewisville (S.C.), China Grove Carson, Charlotte Myers Park, Unionville Piedmont and Marshville Forest Hills on the campus of Wingate.
East Lincoln will participate in the second session, which begins at 10 a.m. The session includes Myers Park, Piedmont and Forest Hills. The other four teams open at 8 a.m.
The Wolves host Maiden, Cherryville and Watauga in a four-team jamboree that will begin at 6 p.m. Admission is $5.
The Knights begin early Saturday with a 9:30 a.m. scheduled scrimmage time against the Huskies from Gastonia.
The NCHSAA allows a maximum of seven hours of scrimmage time, which usually limits teams to two scrimmages each.
East Lincoln’s second scrimmage will be a week from today at the eight-team Cleveland County Jamboree. The jamboree, held at Kings Mountain High, will feature the Mustangs, Crest, Northern Guilford, Burns, Shelby, Hickory, Kings Mountain and Asheville Reynolds.
Lincolnton will travel to East Surry on Aug. 16 for its final preseason scrimmage. North Lincoln hosts East Rowan on Wednesday and West Lincoln heads to Cherryville on Aug. 16 for those two final scrimmages.
The regular season kicks off at 7:30 p.m. on Aug. 23. East Lincoln opens at East Gaston, North Lincoln and Lincolnton open against each other at Lincolnton, and the Rebels host Valdese Draughn.
The state playoffs begin on Nov. 15.

• EL to host boys soccer jamboree: The Mustangs will host a 12-team, 12-match boys soccer jamboree on Saturday on their practice field. Admission is $1 and concessions will be available.
The event will begin at 8 a.m. with a match held every hour, on the hour, with the final match being held at 7 p.m. between East Lincoln and North Lincoln.
Teams involved are: Waxhaw Cuthbertson, Shelby, Polk County, Lincolnton, West Stokes, Lake Norman Charter, Monroe Central Academy, West Lincoln, Bandys, Lake Norman High and North Lincoln.
The schedule is as follows: Lincolnton vs. Lake Norman High, 8 a.m.; Cuthbertson vs. West Lincoln, 9 a.m.; Lake Norman High vs. Lake Norman Charter, 10 a.m.; Cuthbertson vs. West Stokes, 11 a.m.; Lincolnton vs. Lake Norman Charter, noon; West Stokes vs. West Lincoln, 1 p.m.; Shelby vs. Central Academy, 2 p.m.; Polk County vs. North Lincoln, 3 p.m.; Bandys vs. Shelby, 4 p.m.; Polk County vs. East Lincoln, 5 p.m.; Bandys vs. Central Academy, 6 p.m.; East Lincoln vs. North Lincoln, 7 p.m.
All proceeds made at the event will go towards a family who recently lost its home due to a fire, Mustangs coach Jason Dragoon said.
