A Maiden man is accused of punching a deputy in the face Saturday, sending the officer to the hospital.

Grady Adam Allen, 30, of 1391 Goldrock Trail, has since been evaluated at Frye Regional Medical Center in Hickory. However, the facility found no reason to commit him since he now sits behind bars in the Lincoln County jail.

Public Information Officer Larry Seagle said Sgt. Robert Jeffries responded to a location on East Main Street to help city police take Allen into custody on an involuntary commitment order.

During the incident, the man allegedly punched Jeffries in the face after the deputy momentarily turned away to put out a cigarette he pulled from the suspect’s mouth.

Emergency Medical Services transported the injured deputy to Carolinas Medical Center-Lincoln for treatment, the Sheriff’s Office said.

Allen faces one count of assault on a law enforcement officer and is being held under a $9,000 bond.
