The slate of candidates for the Nov. 5 Lincolnton municipal election should be set, with the two-week filing period having closed Friday at noon.
No new candidates threw their names in any of the three races up for contention last week. Likewise, with no same-party candidates seeking the same city office, a primary election will not be necessary.
Candidates are as follows:
Incumbent Mayor John Gilleland, a Republican first elected to the post in 2009, is seeking a third two-year term. With no other mayoral candidates, he will run unopposed.
Lincolnton City Council Ward I Seat
Incumbent Republican Devin Rhyne will be challenged by Democrat Mary Frances White, owner of Ebony & White’s Funeral Service.
Lincolnton City Council Ward III Seat
Democrat Martin Eaddy and Republican Jerry “Jay” Thomas will both seek the seat currently occupied by Democrat Carroll Heavner, first elected to the council in 1971. He has represented Ward III since 1993 and was also the mayor of Lincolnton from 1982 until 1987.
Members of the council are elected at large but are required to file for election by ward, with two members, serving four-year terms, elected every two years.
The deadline for voter registration is Oct. 11.
