Police are investigating a case of arson following an outbuilding blaze Wednesday night behind a city residence.
The incident occurred just before 10:30 p.m. at 2025 Bost Street in Lincolnton, according to the Lincolnton Fire Department, which served as the scene’s primary responder.
The 14-by-20 storage space suffered smoke damage, and firefighters didn’t clear the scene until two hours later, Fire Chief Mitch Burgin said.
According to Det. Ashley Boyles, police believe the fire was started on purpose.
The homeowner told investigators he noticed screws missing from the outbuilding door, and the door pushed in when he went to investigate the smoky scene, a report said.
He was alerted to the incident after hearing popping noises on three different occasions, police said.
Boger City Volunteer Fire Department additionally responded to the blaze.
The Lincolnton Fire Department and Lincolnton Police Department are conducting a joint investigation into the mysterious blaze.
