Cherryville Post 100 is trying to do something it seems to do year-in and year-out, while Lincoln County Post 455 is trying to do it for the first time –– get to the American Legion N.C. state tournament.
The series winner between the Cardinals and Post 100 qualifies for the eight-team event, which will be held in Wilson at Fleming Stadium beginning next Friday. Post 455 currently holds a 2-1 lead in the best-of-five series.
Lincoln County has never been this far in its 21-year history, according to the Gaston Gazette. The Cardinals won their first semifinal game on Tuesday, and are looking for their first berth into the Area IV finals with a series win over Cherryville.
The best-of-three Area IV finals are scheduled to begin on Sunday. The Cherryville-Lincoln County winner will face the winner between Hickory and Shelby. That series is tied 1-1.
Five teams have already qualified for the state tournament –– host Wilson Post 13, defending state champion Wilmington Post 10, Jacksonville Post 265, Randolph County Post 45 and Kernersville.
Wilmington defeated Cherryville in the state finals in Granite Falls last year.
No matter who qualifies between Cherryville and Lincoln County, it will have an early start time for Game 1.
The Area IV champion will open the tournament against the Area III runner-up at 9:30 a.m. on July 26. The Area IV runner-up will face the Area III champion at 12:30 p.m.
The tournament is double elimination. Its winner moves on to compete in the Southeast Regional, held in Asheboro. That winner moves to the American Legion World Series, held in Shelby.
