Deputies: Lincolnton man recovers in ICU after roommate shot him

Staff Writer
A Lincolnton man shot another man in the side and leg during an altercation Monday evening, sending him to the hospital, deputies said.
According to the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office, Jeffery Loranzie Byrd, 45, used a .22 caliber pistol to shoot Jeffrey Dean Tucker, 47, twice at the Buffalo Shoals Road residence where the men lived.
The incident happened just before 10 p.m.
Deputies said the men started arguing following an argument between Tucker and a woman, who was also at the home that night.
During the men’s argument, Tucker allegedly assaulted his roommate, prompting Byrd to get a gun.
Detectives said Byrd warned Tucker beforehand that he was going to get the weapon and to leave the property.
After Tucker refused to listen and lunged at the other man, Byrd shot him in the right leg, the Sheriff’s Office said.
Byrd fired a second shot into Tucker’s right side after Tucker, again, failed to flee the area like Byrd suggested and used an aluminum crutch to strike him.
Emergency Medical Services responded to the scene and transported Tucker to Carolina Medical Center-Lincoln, where medical crews later airlifted him to CMC-Main in Charlotte for surgery.
Deputies said the victim was still recovering in the hospital’s Intensive Care Unit Tuesday afternoon.
Lead Sheriff’s investigators, Det. Lt. Tim Johnson and Det. Dan Renn, conferred with Cleveland Lincoln County District Attorney Rick Shaffer on the case.
Shaffer ruled Byrd’s actions in the incident to be self-defense, and no charges were filed, the Sheriff’s Office said.
