Cherryville Post 100’s run at adding to its record of consecutive Area IV championships is still going strong.
Tyler Shumaker drove in three runs and Cameron High took a shutout bid into the seventh inning as Post 100 advanced with a 6-2 win over Mint Hill at Charlotte Independence in Game 4 of their best-of-five quarterfinal series on Sunday.
The win came after Mint Hill stayed alive with a 10-9 extra-inning win earlier on Sunday, a doubleheader forced by Saturday’s rainout.
Post 100 (16-12) will face Lincoln County Post 455 in a best-of-five semifinal series with Game 1 set to begin at 7 p.m. on Tuesday at East Lincoln High. Cherryville has won the last six Area IV titles.
The Post 455-Post 100 series winner is assured a berth in the American Legion state tournament held in Wilson July 26-30.
High’s shutout bid ended with one out in the seventh. He fanned 10, gave up seven hits and walked two in the complete-game win.
Shumaker hit a two-out two-run double as part of a four-run first inning that all but decided the outcome. Dalton Towery drove in a run with a double in the inning as well, and he made it 5-0 in the third on a sac fly that scored Shumaker.
Shumaker had two hits and three RBIs.
n Game 3 –– Mint Hill 10, Cherryville 9, 11 inn.: Mint Hill forced Game 4 and a doubleheader on Logan Sherer’s walk-off home run in the 11th after Brandon Alexander’s RBI single tied it at 9 in the top of the ninth.
Post 100 trailed 8-4 before rallying in the latter innings thanks to a grand slam by Dalton Eisenbath in the fifth.
Alexander and Brett Huff had three hits. Cameron High and Clay Fuller had two hits with Fuller hitting a three-run homer in the third that cut Mint Hill’s 4-0 lead to 4-3.
Derrick Braun pitched two innings in the loss. He retired six of the first seven he faced before Sherer’s homer.
Sherer had four hits and three RBIs and Eisenbath had three hits, two homers and drove in seven.
n Game 2 –– Cherryville 6, Mint Hill 5: Tyler Shumaker’s fifth-inning two-run home run followed by Hunter Jackson’s RBI single gave Post 100 a lead it never gave up Friday in a game it trailed by four runs early on.
Cherryville fell behind 5-1 in the third on Logan Sherer’s grand slam, but after that Belmont Abbey freshman and Cherryville graduate Heath King settled in. King gave up just one hit and walked one across the final six innings and struck out 12 on the night, including the side in the ninth in the complete-game win.
Post 100 scored four runs in the fifth. Cameron High singled home Josh Beam, who singled. Shumaker followed with his homer then Jackson ripped a one-out single down the line that scored Brandon Alexander, who doubled.
Dalton Towery wetn 2-for-3 with a walk and an RBI on a hit in the second. Shumaker was 2-for-3 with an RBI hit in the third. Cody Dellinger added two hits and scored a run.
