Bobby Bivens

VALE — Bobby Lee Bivens, 71, of Vale passed away Monday, July 8, 2013 at Catawba Regional Hospice in Newton.

Born September 10, 1941 in Lincoln County, he was the son of the late John Bivens and the late Maybelle Canipe Bivens. Bobby was the best husband, dad and grandfather a family could ever have.

Left to cherish his memory are, his wife of 54 years: Essie “Sue” Fredell Bivens of the home; two sons, David Bivens and Jeannie of Vale; Derrick Bivens and Shannon of Crouse; four daughters, Debbie B. Miller and Tim of Hickory; Donna B. Clark and Walter “Bam” of Hickory; Darlene B. Miller and Roger of Lincolnton; Denise “Mush” B. Byers and Jim of Lincolnton, three brothers and three sisters, fourteen grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held in celebration of the life of Bobby Bivens today at Burke Mortuary Chapel in Maiden with Pastor George Bush officiating.  The family will receive friends, prior to the service, from 2 until 2:45 p.m. at the funeral home.

Jack Green
VALE — Jack Sevier Green, 79, of 6887 Lackey Road, Vale, passed away Monday, July 8, 2013 surrounded by his loving family. Born September 18, 1933 in Sevierville, Tenn. he was a son of the late Riley Green and Rapsey Messer Green.  He was retired as a construction worker. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his wife, Dot Green and several brothers and sisters.

Survivors include sons, Ervin Green and wife, Cecilia, Dennis Green and wife, Beth, Terry Green, B.J. Green and wife, Amanda and J.R. Green and wife, Brenda; daughters, Donna Bates and husband, Ken, Jackie Miller and husband, Skip, Debora Prestwood and husband, Doug, Rita Cagle, Angel Green, Barbara Green; and numerous loving grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Visitation was held from 1 p.m.  until 2 p.m., Tuesday, July 9, 2013 at Stamey Funeral Home, Fallston. Funeral service was held at 2 p.m., Tuesday at Stamey Funeral Home Chapel, Fallston with Pastor Mike Chambers officiating.  Burial was at Gaston Memorial Park, Gastonia.

Inez Wilson Houser

VALE — Inez Wilson Houser, age 92, of 1321 Cedar Grove Church Road in Vale, died on Tuesday, July 9, 2013.

Her funeral service will be 2:30 p.m. on Thursday, July 11, 2013 in the Warlick Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Jerry Millwood officiating. Burial will follow in the Reeps Grove United Methodist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 12:45 until 2:15 p.m. prior to the service at the funeral home.

Mrs. Houser was born August 7, 1920 in Lincoln County to the late Burgin and Janie Cook Wilson. In addition to her parents, she was also preceded in death by her husband, Odell Floyd Houser and two sisters, Bryte Carswell and Arlee Canipe. She was a homemaker.

She is survived by a son, Floyd Steve Houser of the home; two daughters, Linda Parker of Vale and Judy Helms and husband Dean of Vale; a sister, Lunez Sain of Lawndale; five grandchildren, Karen Sharpe and husband Greg of Wilkesboro, Billy Helms, Deanna Hardy and husband Shane, all of Vale, Pamela Martin and husband James of Lincolnton, and Brenda Timmons and husband Mitch of Gastonia; and one great-grandson, Garrett Hardy.

Gloria Harkey McRorie

CHARLOTTE — Gloria Harkey McRorie, age 83, of Charlotte died July 7th, 2013 at home – The Carriage Club of Charlotte.

Mrs. McRorie was born November 30th, 1929 in Rutherford College, the daughter of the late Rev. W.L. Harkey and Flossie May Harkey. She was a Charter Member of St. Andrews United Methodist Church, a longtime member of the Charity League in which she received the LaRose Grant Award in 1999 and was a member of the Serenity Book Club.

Mrs. McRorie is survived by her husband of 60 years, Reece F. McRorie; four sons, Stephan McRorie and wife Karen of Charlotte, Timothy McRorie and wife Paula of Mooresville, Brian McRorie of Charlotte and Danny McRorie of Spartanburg, S.C.; four grandchildren, Trevor and Aaron McRorie of Charlotte, Drew and Molly McRorie of Mooresville; one brother, Calvin Harkey of Lincolnton; three nephews, Robert Beal, Jr., Jim Jones, and John Harkey; four nieces, Nancy Beal Crawley , Ann Harkey, Patty Blackwell, and Debbie Womble. She is preceded in death by one son, Sean McRorie; brothers, Bill Harkey, Ken Harkey, and Tommy Harkey; sisters, Margaret Harkey Beal and Juanita Harkey Jones; nephew, Richard Harkey; and niece, Judy Beal. A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, July 11th, 2013 at St. Andrews United Methodist Church, 1900 Emerywood Drive, Charlotte, NC 28210 with the Reverend Bob Boggan officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the church. Entombment will follow the service in the Sharon Memorial Park Mausoleum, 5400 Monroe Road, Charlotte, NC 28212. Memorials may be made to St. Andrews United Methodist Church or the Charity League.

Merle Varina Pritchard Duncan, 78, of Newton died Tuesday, July 9, 2013.

The funeral service will be held on Friday, July 12, 2013 at 11 a.m. at Burke Mortuary Chapel, Newton. Burial will follow at Eastview Cemetery, Newton. The family will receive friends prior to the service on Friday from 10 until 10:45 a.m.at the funeral home.

Clifford Howard Royster, 78, of Sherrills Ford died Monday, July 8, 2013.

The funeral service will be held Thursday, July 11, 2013 at 11 a.m. at Mt. Anderson Baptist Church, Maiden. The family will receive friends, prior to the service, from 10 until 10:45 a.m. at the church.

A funeral service will be held at Harbor Point Community Church, Chesapeake, Va. Friday, July 12, 2013 at 2 p.m. with the family receiving friends, prior to the service, from 1 until 1:45 p.m. at the church.   Burial will follow at Meadowbrook Memorial Gardens, Suffolk, Va. on Friday.

Thelma Lanier Payne, 90, of Terrell, died July 8, 2013.

Funeral services will be held at St. John’s Lutheran Church, Cherryville, Saturday, July 13, 2013 at 2 p.m. Burial will follow in St. John’s Lutheran Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends at Carpenter’s Funeral and Cremations Services from 12:30 until 1:30 p.m.
