Fall enrollment

New Student Orientation
Gaston College will host a four-day Basic Skills New Student Orientation class 9 a.m. to noon and 5:30-8:30 p.m. today (June 8) through July 11 in room 118 of the Lincoln Campus, 511 S. Aspen St. in Lincolnton. Changes to the GED will commence in 2014, affecting cost and method of testing. Previous partial test scores will also expire. Students are required to take the orientation class before taking the GED or receiving an Adult High School diploma. Additional class dates will be July 22-25 and Aug. 5-8. Coral Park Baptist, 295 Springs East Rd. in Lincolnton, will host “Heroes for Christ” Vacation Bible School 6:30-8:30 p.m. daily today (Monday) through Friday.

Play auditions

Puppet show
The Lincoln County Public Library will host the Charlotte-based, award-winning group the Grey Seal Puppets 10:30 a.m. at the Citizens Center in Lincolnton. The event is part of the library’s Summer Reading Special Performance series. The Grey Seal Puppets will present the program “Tangle of Tales.” For more information on the event, call (704) 732-0548. Blood drive
Pisgah UMC, 2582 Gastonia Hwy. in Lincolnton, will host a blood drive 2:30-6:30 p.m. in connection with the American Red Cross. To schedule an appointment, call 1-800-RED-CROSS or visit redcrossblood.org and enter sponsor code “Pisgah UMC.”

Mt. Zion Baptist Church, 2151 Mt. Zion Ch. Rd. in Alexis, will host “Colossal Coaster World” Vacation Bible School 6-9 p.m. daily today with dinner at 5:30 p.m. VBS will be 9 a.m. to noon on Saturday and 10 a.m. to noon on Sunday with a church-wide cookout following the program.

Blood drive
Community Blood Center of the Carolinas will host a blood drive 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at BBQ King in Lincolnton. Student Michaela Setzer is helping to host the drive in hopes of winning a scholarship. First-responder course

Bluegrass concert

River Oaks Band
Bud Long’s River Oaks Band will not perform this month due to vacation scheduling. The band will perform again in August.

Catawba Valley Community College will host a free new student orientation and registration 5:30-9 p.m. July 16. Register two weeks ahead of time at cvcc.edu/NSO. Space is limited. ACT meeting
Register by Aug. 1 to attend A.S.P.I.R.E., (ACT Supplemental Preparation In Rural Education) curriculum to help improve ACT scores. The N.C. Cooperative Extension is hosting the exam 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Aug. 24, Sept. 28, Nov. 2 and Dec. 7, each at the Citizens Center in Lincolnton.
