John Lewis Parker

MAIDEN — Mr. John Lewis Parker, age 90, of 7045 Startown Road in Maiden, died on Thursday, July 4, 2013.

His funeral service will be 2 p.m. on Sunday, July 7, 2013 at Bethlehem United Methodist Church in Cherryville with Rev. Jonathan Foster officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. on Saturday, July 6, 2013 at Warlick Funeral Home.

Mr. Parker was born November 22, 1922 in Gaston County to the late Ernest Reid and Cordie Wright Parker. In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by his wife, Margaret Caudill Parker; brothers, Hoyt Parker and Reid Parker; and a sister, Lois Graham. He served in the United States Army during World War II and then, after discharge, founded Maiden Amusement Company. He was a member of the VFW, American Legion, DAV and Moose Lodge.

He is survived by two sons, Ronald Parker and wife Lisa and James Parker and wife Julie, all of Newton; three daughters, Janice Parker of Maiden, Debra Prahl and husband Randy of Berlin, WI, and Lisa Moore and husband Ryan of Newton; four brothers, Clinton Parker and wife Esther of Rockingham, Ray Parker and wife Anna of Lincolnton, Stowe Parker and wife Patricia of Gastonia, and Dr. Blaine Parker and wife Harriett of Lexington, KY; two sisters, Evelyn Leatherman and husband John of Lincolnton and Edna Brendle and husband John of Cherryville; twelve grandchildren, Dalton Jordan, McKenna Parker, Jennifer Prahl, Sarah Robertson, Hannah Prahl, Brittany Wright, Faith Moore, Kasey Parker, Karson Parker, Kiley Parker, Macie Parker, and Luke Parker; and six great-grandchildren.

Cecil Shrum

Cecil Gamble Shrum, 91, of Lincolnton passed away Wednesday, July 3, 2013 at Brian Center, Lincolnton.

Born April 29, 1922 in Lincoln County, he was the son of the late Miles Solomon Shrum and the late Lillie Bumgarner Shrum. Mr. Shrum was a member of Lawings Chapel Baptist Church in Maiden.

In addition to his parents, his wife of 68 years, Betty Shrum, passed away April of this year; also, preceding him in death, three brothers, Marshall Shrum, David Schrum and Benny Shrum of Lincolnton.

Survivors include two sons, Larry Shrum and wife, Jackie of Lincolnton, Warren Shrum and wife, Edith of Lincolnton; one daughter, Rachel Johnson of Lincolnton; one brother, Dwight Shrum and wife, Louise of Lincolnton; one sister, Alma S. Fish of Lincolnton; four grandchildren; three great-grandchildren.

A funeral service will be held today at 3 p.m. at Lawings Chapel Baptist Church in Maiden with Rev. Stephen Rector and Rev. Marion Powell officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

The family will receive friends, prior to the service, from 2 p.m. until 2:45 p.m. at the church.

Jepty Millard Hooper Jr.

Jepty Millard Hooper Jr., 50, of Denver, died June 30, 2013.

A funeral service will be at 5 p.m. July 6, 2013 at Living Word Ministries, Stanley. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service.

Lorene Vada Heavner Pruett

Lorene Vada Heavner Pruett, 95, of Cherryvillle died July 2, 2013.

Funeral services will be held at First Baptist Church in Cherryville on today at 4 p.m. Burial will follow in City Memorial Cemetery. The family will receive friends today from 1:30 p.m. until 3:30 p.m. at Carpenter’s Funeral and Cremation Services.

Ray Hoyle Smith

Dr. Ray Hoyle Smith, 83, of Cherryville died July 2, 2013.

A memorial service will be held at First United Methodist Church, Cherryville today at 2 p.m. Burial will follow in City Memorial Cemetery. The family will receive friends following the burial in the fellowship hall at First United Methodist Church.
