As a fire investigation gets underway surrounding a more than century-old mill consumed by flames Monday, police and fire officials are seeking the public’s help in determining the cause.

Massapoag Mill in Lincolnton burned from at least 6 p.m. to 11 p.m., pushing smoke into the heart of the city, providing smoky conditions and fire fumes for area citizens.

The sight of a former textile mill, the brick structure has since been abandoned and condemned, but at the time of the incident, still housed various items from area renters, fire officials said.

Because the cause of the blaze remains undetermined, with the possibility of arson still on investigators’ minds, Lincolnton Police Department, who is assisting the Lincolnton Fire Department in examining the case, issued a press release Wednesday afternoon asking the community for potential leads.

Anyone who may have information on the fire or who was on scene shortly before fire crews arrived, is asked to contact Det. Dennis Harris at (704) 736-8900. Sources may remain anonymous by calling Crime Stoppers at (704) 736-8909.
