Herbert Guy Lewis

Herbert Guy Lewis, 85, of Denver, passed away at his home on Friday, June 14, 2013. He was born on June 11, 1928, in Miami, Fla., the son of the late Guy and Lois Lewis. He was also preceded in death by his brothers, William and John Nelson Lewis.

Herbert is survived by his wife of 60 years, Ruth Somers Lewis; five children, Rene Roman and husband, David, Guy Lewis and wife, Kay, Gary Lewis and Lisa Coltrane, Donna Lewis and Susan Van Patten and husband, Scott; five grandchildren, Aaron Shuford and husband, Jason, Emily Wise, Caleb Murray, Katelyn Lewis and Alexander Roman; two great grandchildren, Ireyona and Jaiden; two brothers Harold and Keith Lewis.

Herbert served proudly in the United States Army.

Herbert came to Denver in 1952, met Ruth and never left. He worked for Duke Power for 30 years and was lovingly known as “Cannonball”. He loved God and his family with all his heart and was a faithful member of Thompson Memorial EMC.

The family received friends from 6:30 p.m. until 8:30 p.m. on Monday, June 17, 2013 at The Good Samaritan Funeral Home 3362 North Highway 16 Denver, NC. Funeral services was held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, June 18, 2013 at Thompson Memorial EMC, Forney Hill Road, Denver. Burial followed at Thompson Memorial EMC Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to Thompson Memorial EMC Church or Hospice of Lincoln County.

Elsie Rita DeSalvo Burgess

Elsie Rita DeSalvo Burgess, age 90, formerly of 1465 Whispering Hill Trail in Lincolnton, died on Sunday, June 16, 2013.

Her funeral service will be 10 a.m. on Friday, June 21, 2013 in the Warlick Funeral Home Chapel with Father Matthew Buettner officiating. Burial will follow in Forest LawnCemetery.

Mrs. Burgess was born November 22, 1922 in the Bronx, NY to the late Charles and Edith Attanasio DeSalvo. Mrs. Burgess was also preceded in death by her husband Calvin Burgess. She worked as a secretary.

She is survived by a brother-in-law, Bill Burgess and wife Jeanette; additional sisters-in-law, Mary Ann Burgess, Mildred Burgess, Mildred Burgess Deon; multiple nieces and nephews as well as great nieces and nephews; a cousin, Joan Perez; and a godchild Anne McLaughlin.

Thomas ‘Gene’ Saunders

Mr. Thomas “Gene” Saunders, age 74 of Lincolnton, went home to be with the Lord on Tuesday, June 18, 2013.

His funeral service will be 11 a.m. on Thursday, June 20, 2013 at Boger City Baptist Church with Rev. Bill Bigham officiating. Burial will follow in Forest Lawn Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 9:30 a.m. until 10:45 a.m. prior to the service at the church. At other times, the family will be at the home of Sue and Clyde Chapman, 2430 E. Highway 150 in Lincolnton.

Mr. Saunders was born July 21, 1938 in Lincoln County to the late W. Glenn and Sarah Little Saunders. He worked as a store manager for Harris-Teeter Supermarkets. He loved his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, and was a faithful member, and former deacon, of Boger City Baptist Church. He also had a passion for golfing and was a longtime member of Lincoln Country Club.

He is survived by his wife, Leslie Marie Rudisill Saunders of Lincolnton; a son, Jody Saunders and wife Deanna of Lincolnton; a daughter, Lynn Beebe and husband Jon of Boone; one brother, Reid Saunders and special friend, Linda Beal of Lincolnton; two sisters, Sue Chapman and husband Clyde of Lincolnton and Dianne Yount and husband Ronald of Cullowhee; and four grandchildren, Justin Beebe, Laurel Beebe, Darren Beebe, and AnnMarie Robinson.

Memorials may be made to Boger City Baptist Church, 2201 E. Main Street, Lincolnton, NC 28092.

Catherine Claire Donahue Vickers

Catherine Claire Donahue Vickers, 86, of Hickory, formerly of Belmont and Oceanport, N.J., died June 14, 2013.

A Mass of Christian burial will be held today at 10 a.m. at St. Dorothy’s Catholic Church, Lincolnton.

Burial will follow in the Belmont Abbey Monastery. The family will receive friends today from 9 a.m. until 9:45 a.m. at the church.

Lorene C. Laney

Lorene Cline Cauthen Laney, 94, of Maiden died June 16, 2013.

A funeral service will be held  June 20, 2013 at 4 p.m. at Center View Baptist Church, Maiden. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends this evening from 6:30 p.m. until 8 p.m. at Burke Mortuary, Newton.

Ida Mae Gregory

Ida Mae Gregory, 83, of Iron Station died June 15, 2013.

Services will be held June 21, 2013 at 2 p.m. at Tucker’s Grove United Methodist Church.  The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service.  The interment will be in the church cemetery.

Michelle Lee Day 

Michelle Lee Day, 43, of Mt. Holly died June 11, 2013.

The family received friends June 16, 2013 from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. at Holy Spirit Catholic Church, Denver. A funeral was held at 11 a.m. at Holy Spirit Church.

The Good Samaritan Funeral Home, Denver served the Day family.

 

Norman Callaway

Norman Edgerton Callaway, 78, of Maiden died June 18, 2013.

A funeral service will be held June 22, 2013 at 2 p.m. at Providence Road Baptist Church, Maiden. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.  The family will receive friends, prior to the service, from 1 p.m. until 1:45 p.m. at the church.
