Lincoln County’s Randal Ortiz hit a leadoff home run on the first pitch he saw against Clover on Wednesday, and after that, a Cardinals victory was all but assured as the team took a 14-1 nonconference victory.
The team scored one more run in the bottom of the first for a 2-0 lead. The first-place Cardinals (6-4, 4-0 Eastern Division) scored one run in the fourth and four runs in the fifth to take a 7-0 lead before Clover added its lone run of the game in the sixth.
Lincoln County exploded for seven runs in the bottom of the sixth for the final margin.
Bradley Hallman picked up the win for the Cardinals, who fielded a team of 11 players since several are on vacation after local high schools held graduation ceremonies on Saturday.
Ortiz, Danny Sullivan and Jacob Hoover led Lincoln County with three hits apiece.
The Cardinals resume action on Saturday with a home game at East Lincoln High School against Queen City at 7 p.m. They host Kings Mountain at 7 p.m. Sunday.
