John Lee Best

SHERRILLS FORD — John Lee Best, age 82, of 4934 Moonlite Bay Drive in Sherrills Ford, died on Friday, May 24, 2013.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, May 29, 2013 at St. Peter-by-the-Lake Episcopal Church with Father Ron Taylor officiating. A reception for receiving of friends will follow the service.

Mr. Best was born August 4, 1930 in Gaston County to the late Willard and Clyda Carpenter Best. He served in the United States Army Corps of Engineers and then later was a mechanical engineer/designer.

He is survived by his wife, Linda W. Best of the home; two sons, Brian Lee Best of Raleigh and Ronald Little Best of Lincolnton; a stepson, Michael Maddox and wife Lauren of Charlotte; one stepdaughter, Theresa Maddox Berry and husband Chris of Hudson; three brothers, James Best of Charlotte, Bill Best and wife Wilma of Rock Hill, S.C., and Gene Best and wife Myrtle of Dallas, N.C.; one sister, Marlene Kiser and husband Hugh of Jacksonville, Fla.; four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to East Lincoln Christian Ministries, 4278 Catawba Burris Road, Denver, NC  28037.

Darrell Hoover

IRON STATION — Mr. Darrell Hoover, age 81, of 3251 Bluegrass Lane in Iron Station, died on Thursday, May 23, 2013.

His funeral service was 3 p.m. on Sunday, May 26, 2013 at Stanley Pentecostal Holiness Church with Rev. Dr. Danny W. Penny officiating. Burial followed in the Alexis Baptist Church cemetery. The family received friends from 1:30 p.m. until 2:50 p.m. prior to the service at the church.

Mr. Hoover was born October 17, 1931 in Gaston County to the late Loy and Fannie Long Hoover. In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by grand daughter-in-law, Tisa Dellinger and great-granddaughter, Payton Dellinger. He served in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict and then later worked as a pipe installer.

He is survived by his wife, June Humphries Hoover of the home; a daughter, Donna H. Dellinger and husband Bobby of Maiden; a sister, Phyllis H. Ritchie of Iron Station; three grandchildren, Brandon Dellinger, Dustin Dellinger and wife Kadie, and Ashton Dellinger; and a great-grandson, Sawyer Dellinger.

The family would like to recognize Hospice of Lincoln County for their wonderful care during Mr. Hoover’s illness.

Ralph Durant Ballenger

Ralph Durant Ballenger, age 83, of Highway 182 in Lincolnton, died on Friday, May 24, 2013.

His funeral service will be 3 p.m. today at RiverView Baptist Church with Rev. Ricky Brown officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 2 p.m. until 2:45 p.m. prior to the service at the church.

Mr. Ballenger was born May 12, 1930 in Lincoln County to the late James Smiley and Annie Lee Reep Ballenger. In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by a daughter, Joanie Ballenger. He worked as a truck driver.

He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Rachel Johnson Ballenger of the home; one daughter, Betty Ballenger Rhodes; two brothers, John Ballenger and wife Frances and Jerry Ballenger and wife Ida, all of Lincolnton; two grandchildren, Jamie Heavner and Amanda Stroupe and husband Benjamin of Cherryville; and six great-grandchildren, Matthew, Colton, Reid and Miles Stroupe and Nick and Will Heavner.

Sybil Lena Dora Duncan

Sybil Lena Dora Duncan of Union Mills, formerly of Lincolnton died May 25, 2013.

Funeral services for Ms. Duncan will be private.
