Susan Eileen Houser Armstrong

Susan Eileen Houser Armstrong, age 88, of 782 Armstrong Farm Way in Lincolnton, died on Sunday, May 19, 2013.

Her funeral service will be 2 p.m. today at Daniels Lutheran Church with Rev. Ted Bost officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends in the fellowship hall from 12:45 p.m. until 1:45 p.m. prior to the service.

Mrs. Armstrong was born June 2, 1924 in Cleveland County to the late Daniel Grier and Hattie Houser. In addition to her parents, she was also preceded in death by her husband, Paul Allen Armstrong and a son, Joel Ray Armstrong. Mrs. Armstrong worked as an accountant for Custom Transport.

She is survived by a daughter, Susanne Armstrong Barbee of High Point; a son, Allen Edward Armstrong of Lincolnton; one sister, Nevert Reep of Lincolnton; four grandchildren, Allen Ray Armstrong, Katie Barbee, H.W. Barbee, and Stephanie Armstrong; and one great-grandchild, Chloe Barbee.

Mary Jean (Alexander) Bennett

Mary Jean (Alexander) Bennett, age 82, of Lincolnton passed away Monday, May 20, 2013 at Catawba Regional Hospice in Sherrills Ford. She was born October 22, 1930 in Scotland to the late Robert and Agnes Adrain Alexander.

Besides her parents, Mary was preceded in death by her brother, Matthew Alexander; and her sisters, Agnes McKinven and Elizabeth Gutteridge.

Mary is survived by her husband of 59 years, Leslie Verl Bennett of the home; one son, David Bennett of Salt Lake City, Utah; and two daughters, Robyn Swain of Canton, Ohio and Heather Baker of Vale; four grandchildren, Leslie Swain and Jacob Swain, both of Columbus, Ohio, Alisha Baker and Dillon Baker, both of Vale; sister, Nancy Barbour and a brother, William Alexander, both of Scotland.

The family is having a private ceremony.

Brenda Millsaps Bond

Brenda Millsaps Bond, age 66, of 209 Forney Avenue in Lincolnton, died on Tuesday, May 21, 2013.

A graveside service will be held at 3 p.m. on Thursday, May 23, 2013 at Forest Lawn Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 1:30 p.m. until 2:30 p.m. on Thursday at Warlick Funeral Home.

Mrs. Bond was born October 2, 1946 in Bryson City to the late Frederick and Reeva Passmore Millsaps. She worked for Pharr Yarns. Brenda loved her flowers, gardens, the mountains, and her grandkids.

She is survived by her husband, Daniel Bond of the home; two daughters, Angela Westmoreland of Lincolnton and Rhonda Postell of Mt. Holly; five grandchildren, Tim Westmoreland and Aaron Westmoreland, both of Dallas, Chris Postell of Stanley, Cody Postell of Stanley, and Courtney Postell of Mt. Holly; brother, Larry Millsaps of Mt. Holly; a sister, Helen Davis of Gastonia; and stepdaughter, Michelle Seegar.

Hilda King Grant

DENVER — Hilda King Grant, 62, of Denver passed away Friday, May 17, 2013 at Catawba Valley Hospice in Sherrills Ford. Born December 2, 1950 in Swain County, she was the daughter of the late Samuel King and the late Dessie Herron King.

Left to cherish her memory are husband of 21 years, Buford Thomas Grant of the home; three daughters, Dana Lineberger Berry and Dustin Berry of Sherrills Ford, Chantae Short of Maiden, Shana Swartz and Patrick Swartz of Fort Campbell, Ky.; two sons, Scott Grant of Maiden, Nathan Grant of Albemarle; one brother, Ray King of Denver; four sisters, Marie Hager of Denver, Loletta Church of Troutman, Sue Pulley of Denver, Dolly Karriker of China Grove; eight grandchildren; one great-granddaughter.

A funeral service will be held Saturday, May 25, 2013 at 11 a.m. at Burke Mortuary Chapel in Maiden with Rev. Robert C. Sapp and Dr. Robert Lynn officiating. Burial will follow in Eastview Cemetery in Newton. The family will receive friends Friday, May 24, 2013 from 6 p.m. until 7:30 p.m. at Burke Mortuary Chapel in Maiden.

Robert W. Long Jr.

LAKE PLACID, FLA. — Robert W. Long Jr., formerly of Lincolnton, passed away in Lake Placid, Fla. on Wednesday, May 15, 2013 surrounded by his loving family and caregivers.

His funeral service will be 3:30 p.m. on Saturday, May 25, 2013 in the Warlick Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor Robert L. Kerr officiating. Burial will follow in Forest Lawn Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 1:30 p.m. until 3:15 p.m. on Saturday prior to the service at Warlick Funeral Home. At all other times the family will be at the home of daughter-in-law, Denise Long, 390 Caprice Circle (Woodland Hills), Lincolnton, NC.

Mr. Long was born April 29, 1930 to Bertha Blanche Carpenter and Robert W. Long Sr. He was founder of the Dallas Pillow Company and CEO for 40 years. He enjoyed hunting and fishing. He loved making fishing lures with his lifetime friend C.O. Brown and selling them at Roses’ stores. Bob was preceded in death by his parents; first wife, Joan Wilson Long of Hickory, and his eldest son Eddie Long of Lincolnton.

Surviving family members include his wife Paula Long; his sons, Danny Long and wife Tammie of Lincolnton, Morris Long and wife Linda of Denver; Eddie’s wife, Denise Long of Lincolnton; stepchildren, Lynne Sain and husband Matt of Denver, and Melissa Gemes and husband David of Lincolnton; grandchildren, Marshall Long, Matthew Long, Kandace Helms, Sarah Long, Jennifer Philbeck, Scott Long and Logan Long; step-grandchildren, Hunter Sain, Eddie Gemes and Maddie Gemes; and great-grandchildren, Peyton Helms and Mason Helms; caregivers, Tammy, Jerry and Jeremy Strong of Lake Placid, Fla.

Bob was a proud Army Veteran of the Korean War Conflict from May 1, 1951 to May 1, 1953.  Bob married Paula Moose in 1994 and they moved to Lake Placid, Fla. in 2008 to be able to enjoy the weather and Bob’s lifetime love – fishing.

Larry James Slater, 72, of Lincolnton died May 18, 2013.
