Production vans and films crews have been spotted in Lincoln County recently, and the offices of the Lincoln Times-News were no exception.

Cast and crew for the film Careful What You Wish For were on site Friday and Monday filming scenes at the newspaper’s Water Street office for the movie starring Dermot Mulroney, Isabel Lucas, Nick Jonas and Paul Sorvino and directed by Elizabeth Allen.

The film’s plot revolves around an affair between Jonas, making his feature debut, and Lucas — Jonas as a typical high school student and Lucas as the wife of a wealthy investment banker. When Lucas’s husband, played by Mulroney, is found murdered, Jonas’s character finds himself as the prime suspect in the subsequent investigation.

Sorvino, perhaps best known for his role as mob boss Paul Cicero in Martin Scorsese’s 1990 film Goodfellas, granted an exclusive interview to the Times-News on Monday in which he described Careful What You Wish For and his role as a southern sheriff.

“It’s about the seduction of a young man and the case that’s all around it,” Sorvino said. “I’m involved in this case. I think it’s happening to the wrong kind of person but all of the evidence points to him.”

Sorvino said part of what drew him to the role was that the character is not the archetypical southern lawman.

“He’s a sheriff who goes by his own rules — a benevolent kind of guy,” he said. “He keeps everybody happy and safe. He sings with a honky-tonk band. It’s a different kind of role because it’s not a typical push-you-around kind of southern sheriff. He’s actually a really nice guy. And the script is very well written. It’s all about the material. It’s a question of whether the role is right, the material is right, the financial aspect of it is right. That’s how you make your decisions. Combine the elements and see what it is.”

Sorvino has played a southern sheriff before, including a role in the 1983 television miniseries Chiefs as Sheriff Skeeter Willis, so nailing down a good southern accent was no problem.

“I do my research,” he said. “By the time I get here I have my accent all ready. I get samples and I study them and record them.”

After his work on Careful What You Wish For wraps up, Sorvino is off to Chicago to star in Precious Mettle, a murder mystery. He plays a police commander who is reunited with a daughter he didn’t know he had.
