Estate Jewelers, located on East Main Street in downtown Lincolnton, is marking its 45th anniversary this year.
The store, which began as Old South Antiques in 1968, was originally located on South Academy Street. It was here that owners David and Carol Self first met, when Carol, a native of California, began working at the shop owned by her future husband.
They eventually wed and decided to shift their focus to strictly jewelry, which Carol Self said she has always loved. Her husband, she joked, had also grown tired of hauling furniture around.
The business, which specializes in estate jewelry, antique jewelry, diamonds, gold, silver and vintage pocket watches, has been at its current location since 1993. Previously home to a Western Auto store, the building required major renovations to transform the space, which now features ornate woodwork and decor.
Carol is quick to differentiate between “estate” and “antique” jewelry, noting that the former indicates it was previously owned while the latter means it is more than 100 years old.
Proudly on display at Estate Jewelers are diamond bracelets and earrings harkening back to the glamorous days of “Old Hollywood,” as well as those from the Victorian and Edwardian ages.
The store also offers custom-made pieces and a selection of engagement rings, in addition to a wide range of unique collectibles.
“If we don’t have it, it’s unusual,” Carol said of the variety of items for sale.
With an in-house jeweler, the shop also provides custom and repair work.
The couple has traveled extensively over the years, while also attending many antique shows and expos. This has allowed them to acquire quite the assortment of merchandise.
Due to sought-after and hard-to-find items in their inventory, many of their customers come from far and wide, with roughly half of them from out of town, Carol estimated.
“People from all over come here,” she said.
Among some of their former customers are a few celebrities, including Whoopi Goldberg and NASCAR drivers.
Carol credits the store’s longtime success to its focus on customer service, particularly treating people with respect, doing things the right way and providing a selection of price ranges.
“Your reputation is very important,” Carol said.
To celebrate 45 years in business, Estate Jewelers will be offering special promotions during the last two weeks of May.
