Edith Ellen Beam Beam

CHERRYVILLE — Edith Ellen Beam Beam, devoted Mother, cherished grandmother, precious great grandmother, devoted sister, and dearest friend died May 11, 2013 at Carolina Medical Center-Lincoln.

Mrs. Beam was born in Lincoln Co. on April 24, 1927 a daughter of the late Cone Gaston and Vera Hallman Beam. She was a longtime member of Bess Chapel United Methodist Church where she was a member of the United Methodist Women and the Adult Women’s Sunday School Class. She was the owner of Lakewood Care Center in Denver.

In addition to her parents she is preceded in death by her husband F. L. Beam Jr.

Survivors include her children Anita Beam Gillespie (John) of Cherryville, Becky Beam Childers (James) of Cherryville, and Frank L. Beam III of Cherryville; grandchildren, Edi Gillespie Perez(Patrick) of Apex, Ty Frolin Beam (Tiffany) of Cherryville, Franklin Luther “Luke” Beam IV (Natalie) of Cherryville, John Adam Gillespie (Kate) of St. Augustine, Fla., Heidi Beam Hullette (Dustin) of Cherryville, and Madylin Anita Gillespie of Cherryville; nine great grandchildren; and a brother Carroll “Bud” Beam (Berdene) of Cherryville.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday May 14, 2013 at Bess Chapel United Methodist Church at 11 a.m. with Rev. Roy Byers officiating with burial to follow in Mt. Zion Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends this evening from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. at Carpenter’s Funeral and Cremation Services and at other times at the home.

Derry Harris Carpenter

Mr. Derry Harris Carpenter, 81, of Lincolnton, passed away on Saturday, May 11, 2013.

The family will receive friends from 2:30 until 3:15 pm on Tuesday, May 14, 2013 at Warlick Funeral Home.  A graveside service will follow at 3:30 pm at Forest Lawn Cemetery in Lincolnton with Rev. Dr. Stanley Spence officiating.

Mr. Carpenter was born on May 27, 1931 in Gaston County to the late Clifford Rouse and Zona Farris Carpenter.  In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his wife, Joann Huss Carpenter.

He is survived by two daughters and one son, Derri Ann Powell and husband Bob of Hickory, Cathey Denise Davis and husband Johnny of Iron Station, and Scott Harris Carpenter and wife Diana of Lincolnton. He is also survived by six grandchildren: Derrick Barineau, Clete Davis, Josh Davis and fiancé Kaylyn, Ellen Carpenter, Caroline Carpenter, and Julia Carpenter; and a sister, Lorene Carpenter Best of Lincolnton.

Derry graduated from Tryon High School in Gaston County and enrolled in barber school in Winston-Salem after graduation.  After he completed barber school, he enlisted in the U.S. Army and was stationed in the 82nd Airborne in Fort Bragg, NC.  By trade, he barbered in Charlotte, High Shoals, Gastonia and Lincolnton. His happiest times were spending time with his children, grandchildren and on his Ford tractor farming his family land and raising cattle. He was also an avid outdoors man.  He loved to hunt quail with his Brittany Spaniels and enjoyed fishing on Lake Norman.

The Carpenter family would like to thank the special care that was given to our father by Hospice and Palliative Care of Lincoln County.

Danny Allen Griffith

Danny Allen Griffith, age 54, of 1463 Rhodes Rhyne Road in Lincolnton, died on Wednesday, May 8, 2013.

A graveside service will be held at 2:00 pm on Tuesday, May 14, 2013 at Cherryville City Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6:00 until 8:00 pm on Monday, May 13, 2013 at Warlick Funeral Home.

Mr. Griffith was born August 6, 1958 in Lincoln County to the late Warren F. and Mary Jo Elmore Griffith. He worked in textiles.

He is survived by a daughter, Marley Griffith of Fallston; and three brothers, Warren S. Griffith of Lincolnton, Micheal Griffith of Cherryville, and David Griffith of Lincolnton.

Evelyn Louise Benfield Schronce Haynes

Mrs. Evelyn Louise Benfield Schronce Haynes, age 87, of 449 Calvary Church Road, Lincolnton died Friday, May 10, 2013.

Her funeral will be 2:30 p.m. Monday, May 13, 2013 at Calvary Baptist Church with Rev. David Jones and Rev. Ray Pennell officiating. Burial will follow in Forest Lawn Cemetery in Lincolnton.  The family will receive friends from 1 p.m. until 2:15 p.m. today at Calvary Baptist Church.

Mrs. Haynes was born January 25, 1926 in Gaston County and was the daughter of the late Phiffer George Benfield and Blanche Abernethy Benfield. She was also preceded in death by her first husband, Howard Schronce.  She was retired from Crown Converting in Lincolnton.

Mrs. Haynes is survived by her husband, Rev. William W. Haynes Port Royal, S.C.; one son, Roger Schronce of Wis Dells, WI; one daughter, Bobbie Eurey and husband, Bill of Cherryville; four step-daughters, Treva Haynes of Morganton, Pattie Tucker of Winston-Salem, Ann McNeil of Jacksonville, Fla. and Shea Werner of Beaufort, S.C.; two brothers, Jennings Benfield of Lincolnton and Jack Benfield of Lincolnton; five grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

Jimmie  Johnson

Jimmie Allen Johnson, 93, of 7014 Lackey Road, Vale, died Friday, May 10, 2013 at his residence.

Born April 18, 1920 in Cleveland County, he was a son of the late Zeb Vance Johnson and Ola Marie Poole Johnson.  He was retired from Mohican Mills and was a member of Norman’s Grove Baptist Church.  Mr. Johnson served in the US Army during WWII.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his wife, Juanita Lackey Johnson; son, Jimmie D. Johnson; five brothers, Thomas, Charles, Morris, Robert and Darlin Johnson and a granddaughter, Deana Leatherman.

Survivors include two sons, Randy Johnson and wife, Diane, and Ronald Johnson all of Vale; brother, Kenneth Johnson of Lincolnton; three sisters, Louise Yandle and Marie Avery both of Lincolnton and Shirlene Hartis and husband, Roy of Charlotte; eight grandchildren, Nile, Cody, Randai, Stephanie, William, Thomas, Brandy and Kevin; thirteen great-grandchildren, Kayleigh, Jeremiah, Darian, Zach, Callie, Isaac, Graca, Gabe, Kelsey, Jesse, Payton, Braley and Faith; and three great-great grandchildren, Niko, Ryder and Jaylen.

Visitation will be held this evening from 5 p.m. until 6 p.m. at Norman’s Grove Baptist Church, Lawndale. A funeral service will be held at 6 p.m. at Norman’s Grove Baptist Church, Lawndale with Rev. Keith Huss and Rev. Cecil Buff officiating. Burial will be at Norman’s Grove Baptist Church Cemetery, Lawndale.

James Francis Tipton

Mr. James Francis Tipton, age 90 of 281 Shady Lane in Lincolnton, died on Saturday, May 11, 2013.

A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, May 14, 2013 at Forest Lawn Cemetery with Rev. Dr. Stanley Spence officiating.  The family will receive friends from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. this evening at Warlick Funeral Home.

Mr. Tipton was born June 5, 1922 in Spartanburg County, S.C. to the late John Crisman and Jessie Jones Tipton. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Margaret Nance Tipton and son, Charles Tipton. He served in the United States Army Air Corp during World War II.  After leaving the service, he worked as an industrial construction foreman for Howard Construction.

He is survived by two sons, Mark Tipton and wife Darlene Tipton of Lincolnton and Michael Tipton and wife Jill H. Tipton of Dallas; one daughter, Susan Setzer and husband Keith Setzer of Iron Station; daughter-in-law, Jill Tipton of Lincolnton; eight grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

The family would like to thank the neuro staff nurses at Gaston Memorial Hospice for the tender loving care they showed to our father and the family during his final days.

Patricia Ann Griffin Richardson

Mrs. Patricia Ann Griffin Richardson, age 82, of Denver died Thursday, May 9, 2013 at Lake Norman Regional Medical Center.  Born June 9, 1930 in Hickory she was a daughter of the late Oliver and Florence Griffin. She was a member of the Red Hat Society, enjoyed playing bridge and bunko and was a homemaker.

Funeral services were held 2 p.m. Sunday, May 12, 2013 at Unity Presbyterian Church in Denver.  Burial followed in the church cemetery.

She leaves to cherish her memory her children, Robert Richardson and wife LaDonna, Olivia Dolan and husband Thomas, Pam Vasarhelyi and husband, Jim; grandchildren, Kale Vasarhelyi, Ashley Dolan, Drew and Meghan Richardson.

In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband and six siblings.

Carrol Douglas Craig, 68, of Vale died May 10, 2013.

His funeral service will be 2 p.m. today at Hulls Grove Baptist Church. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The body will lie in state for thirty minutes prior to the service. Visitation was held from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. on May 12, 2013 at Warlick Funeral Home.

Jimmy Joe Yarborough, 41, of Lincolnton, died May 9, 2013.

Troy Edward Willard Taylor Sr., 83, of Newton died May 9, 2013.

A funeral service will be held May 14, 2013 at 2 p.m. at the Burke Mortuary Chapel, Newton. Burial will follow at Catawba Memorial Park, Hickory with military graveside honors. The family will receive friends this evening from 6 p.m. until 7:30 p.m. at Burke Mortuary, Newton.

Betty Carolyn Ratchford Holbrook, 79, of Maiden died May 10, 2013.

A funeral service will be held today at 11 a.m. at First Baptist Church, Maiden.

The family will receive friends, prior to the service, from 10 a.m. until 10:45 a.m. at the church.
