Cherryville woman treated at CMC-Lincoln after allegedly beaten and raped

A Cherryville woman was rushed to a Lincoln County hospital after a Catawba County man allegedly broke into her home, raped her and tried to strangle her, various news media outlets have reported.
The incident took place Saturday night at the woman’s home, outlets have said.
Phillip Nathaniel Link, 39, of Hickory was charged in the incident.
He faces one felony count each of first-degree burglary, first-degree rape and assault by strangulation, according to the Gaston County jail website.
Link remains behind bars under a $500,000 secured bond and is due in court today for a first appearance.
The victim was taken to Carolinas Medical Center-Lincoln for treatment for her injuries.
According to the North Carolina Department of Correction website, Link was released from a state correctional facility in March 2012 after serving at least five months for assault on a female in Catawba County.
Link was found guilty of second-degree burglary, a felony, in Lincoln County in 1998, NC DOC showed. Additional misdemeanor charges to his name include drug use, larceny, trespassing, and resisting an officer, among others.
