A western Lincoln County man attached a donkey to his vehicle and dragged the animal down an area roadway Thursday, the Sheriff’s Office said.
Deputies charged Richard Ricky Hudson, 68, of 3120 Frank Cline Road in Vale, with one misdemeanor count of conveying animals in a cruel manner, according to an agency press release.
Deputies responded around 6:30 p.m. to the intersection of Ward Road and Plateau Road after area residents told the Sheriff’s Office they saw Hudson driving his van in the area with a donkey tethered to the vehicle’s trailer hitch, the release said.
The man was walking the animal down the roadway when officers arrived on scene.

The donkey, which had been dragged less than half a mile, sustained several injuries in the incident including scrapes and other bloody wounds on its legs and “rear portion,” the Sheriff’s Office said.

Animal Services is currently housing the donkey in the county shelter.
Hudson has since been released from the Harven A. Crouse Detention Center on a $4,000 secured bond.
