Win at Shelby sets up rematch with East Lincoln today
The West Lincoln Rebels shut out 4A Mallard Creek 4-0 on Wednesday in the second round of the Shelby Easter Tournament.
The win sets West Lincoln up for a nonconference showdown with the East Lincoln Mustangs for fifth place in the tournament at 1 p.m. today. The Rebels won the first meeting between the two teams this season 8-4 on Mar. 26.
Sophomore Alec Johnson pitched a complete game for the Rebels against Mallard Creek and recorded seven strikeouts. Johnson struck out the side in the bottom of the second with 11 pitches.
The Rebels took a 1-0 lead in the first inning and held it until a three-run burst in the sixth.
Brett Huff led off the first inning with a single, advanced to second on a hit by Dalton Towery and found third on a Mallard Creek error.
Chandler Jenkins plated Huff with a sacrifice groundout.
Cameron High led off the sixth inning with a single and then Houston Gilmore, High’s courtesy runner, advanced to second on a Mallard Creek error on a bunt by Derek Strange. Grayson Carroll moved the runners ahead with a sacrifice and the Rebels capitalized on another Mallard Creek error on a groundball by Derrick Braun to second that allowed Gilmore and Strange to score. A single to right field by Johnson plated Braun for the Rebels’ final score of the game.
