CHERRYVILLE — The North Lincoln Lady Knights and the West Lincoln Lady Rebels varsity softball teams both suffered losses on Tuesday in the first round of a round robin tournament hosted by Cherryville High School.
The Lady Knights fell to Hibriten 4-1 in the tournaments opener. Maiden edged West Lincoln 3-2.
North Lincoln scored its lone run on a sacrifice groundout to first base by pitcher Hollyn Franklin in the top of the second.
Hibriten responded with a two RBI double by Kayla Graham in the bottom of the second and a two-run home run to centerfield by Bailey Land in the fourth.
Franklin started the game on the mound for North Lincoln and was relieved by Peyton Wilson in the bottom of the fifth.
Franklin struck out four while Wilson struck out two batters in two innings of relief work.
The Lady Knights, down 2-1 in the fourth, got the tying run on base after a one-out single to left field by Payton Bruce.
Bruce stole second during Emily Bryson’s at-bat, which ended in a strikeout, and stole third during Jayden Maddox’s at-bat. But Maddox hit into a groundout to second to end the inning.
Hibriten was poised to pad its lead in the fifth but a pair of strikeouts by Wilson closed the door on any added offensive production.
Hibriten led off the bottom of the sixth with a single but a groundout, a caught baserunner and a strikeout by Wilson ended the inning.
West Lincoln took a 1-0 lead over Maiden with a one-out solo home run by Courtney Clark in the top of the third but Maiden grabbed the lead in the bottom of the frame with a two-RBI double to center by Jessica Cooper.
