A North Lincoln High School graduate died Sunday at a Charlotte hospital, two days after he jumped from a moving vehicle during a domestic dispute, the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office said.
Emergency Medical Services responded to the scene around 4 p.m. Friday to an area along River Road, just north of Lincolnton, Public Information Officer Kim Green told the Times-News on Tuesday.
According to a Sheriff’s Office report, Justin Garrett Smith, 20, jumped from the vehicle as it turned from Oak Grove Church Road onto River Road.
Smith suffered severe head injuries and was lying in the roadway when EMS crews arrived on scene, the report said.
Before first-responders reached the area, deputies said an area neighbor and the woman who had been driving the vehicle attended to the victim, who was later airlifted to Carolinas Medical Center-Main in Charlotte.
Smith and the woman had been arguing just prior to the incident, Sheriff’s Lt. Tim Johnson, head of criminal investigations, said.
The victim graduated from North Lincoln High School but also attended West Lincoln High School at one point during his high school career.
Smith worked as a welder at Everything Attachments in Newton, according to his obituary.
Family will receive friends 6-8 p.m. Thursday at Warlick Funeral Home in Lincolnton. A funeral service will be 1 p.m. Friday at Covenant Bible Church in Lincolnton.
No charges have been filed in the case.
