Local industries recognized for safety

Staff reports

Numerous local businesses were recognized by the state and North Carolina Department of Labor Commissioner Cherie Berry for their safe practices during 2012 in an awards banquet at the Lincoln Cultural Center on Tuesday.

Over 40 different awards were handed out to businesses, several of which received either gold or silver awards, based on “stringent requirements,” according to a press release from the Department of Labor.

Companies receiving gold-level awards were required to meet a Days Away/Restricted or Job Transfer (DART) rate of “at least 50 percent below the statewide rate for its industry. Silver award recipients were required to “attain an incidence rate for cases with days away from work that is at least 50 percent below the rate for its industry.”

Mohican Mills’ Tricot Knitting Plant received a gold award for the 24th consecutive year.

Cataler and RSI Home Products were both recognized with a Million Hour Award for over one million hours with no lost-time accidents.

“It’s really an honor for me to travel throughout the state and recognize these employers who are making a commitment to their employees’ safety and health,” Berry said in the press release. “These employers are helping to make North Carolina workplaces some of the safest in the country.”

RSI is currently under investigation by the Department of Labor after a Lincolnton man died in an industrial accident at one of its plants in Feb., according to a previous article in the Times-News.
