East Lincoln’s varsity baseball and softball teams swept the Bessemer City Yellow Jackets in Denver on Friday.
The Mustang baseball squad shut out the Yellow Jackets 7-0 and moved to a 5-0 conference record, good for a first-place tie with the West Lincoln Rebels.
The Mustangs and Rebels meet on Tuesday at 7 p.m. on East Lincoln’s field to determine sole possession of first place in the Southern Piedmont 1A/2A Conference.
Nick Savoie earned the win for the Mustangs on Friday with five innings pitched, five strikeouts and two hits. Danny Sullivan and Addison Parrish both pitched one inning of relief work.
The Mustangs scored one run in the first inning, one run in the third, two in the fourth, two in the fifth and one in the seventh.
Cory Petersen went 2-4 at the plate with a solo home run in the fourth and a run scored to lead East Lincoln. Clay Hodges went 2-4 with a run scored, Darin Salter had one hit and one RBI and Chase Watson had one hit and an RBI.
“Got a great pitching performance out of all three pitchers and solid defense making no errors led by Darin Salter and Danny Sullivan,” East Lincoln head coach Chris Matile said in an email. “Got offensive contribution by the entire line-up with eight different guys recording hits and six different guys recording RBIs.”
East Lincoln’s softball team took a 7-1 win over the Yellow Jackets with the win on the mound going to Carly Johnson. Johnson gave up six hits in a complete-game effort with five strikeouts and one walk.
Taylor Wilson led East Lincoln at the plate with a single, a double and a three-run home run. Heidi Parker recorded two single with an RBI, Megan Rowles had a single and an RBI, Booth Braswell added a single and an RBI and Brittany Wayne recorded a single and a double.
East Lincoln (5-4, 3-2 SPC) hosts Bunker Hill today.
