A Cleveland County woman found a Lincolnton man snoring loudly under her bed Sunday morning after Sheriff’s deputies said he broke into her home.

Sheriff Alan Norman told the Times-News Thursday that Matthew Lee Gregg, 25, of 738 Ross Road in Lincolnton, used a screwdriver to pry open a window and gain entry into the victim’s home.

The woman told deputies she heard a suspicious noise coming from her bedroom around 2:30 a.m. after letting her dog in from outside and immediately went to investigate the incident.

After locating Gregg snoring loudly, lying partially under her bed, she contacted 911 and called her next-door neighbor to the scene, Norman said.

Deputies immediately arrested the suspect and later found his vehicle parked a short distance from the residence.

Norman said because the victim owned a gun and was concerned about her safety, Gregg should be thankful she didn’t fire the weapon.

“She would have been totally justified (if she had),” he said.

Gregg remains in the Cleveland County Detention Center under a $250,000 secured bond and faces one felony count each of first-degree burglary and breaking and entering—possession of burglary tools.
