Gerald B. Abernethy

IRON STATION — Gerald Bain Abernethy, age 80, of Iron Station passed away, Sunday, March 17, 2013 at Catawba Regional Hospice in Newton.

Born September 5, 1932 in Lincoln County, he was the son of the late George Washington Abernethy and the late Connie Wilkinson Abernethy. Mr. Abernethy was a member of Lebanon United Methodist Church in Maiden and was employed with Southern Furniture for 44 years.

In addition to his parents; wife, Margaret Elizabeth Williams Abernethy; three brothers, Carl, Herbert and Bobby Abernethy; and four sisters, Luna Bell Howard, Beatrice Hager, Audrey Abernethy and Nadine Hilderbran preceded him in death.

Survivors include one son, Herb and Debbie Abernethy of Lincolnton; one daughter-in-law, Beth Abernethy of Lincolnton; two daughters, Sandy and Jeff Huss of Lincolnton, Terri and Ken Brackett of Crouse; two sisters, Josephine Abernethy of Stanley, Nellie Goodson of Alaska; three grandsons, Scott Abernethy, Herbie Abernethy, Christopher Parker; five granddaughters, Kelly Stroup, Monica McAllister, Lindsey Revels, Crystal McWhirter, Lauren Huss; five great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandson; special friends, Gene and Janice Frye, Maggie Collins; special thanks to the caregivers, Pam Wilkinson, Tonya Lovelace and Tillie Willis.

A memorial service will be held Thursday, March 21, 2013 at 4 p.m. at Lebanon United Methodist Church in Maiden with the Rev. Gary Fulker and Craig Abernathy officiating. The family will receive friends following the service in the church fellowship hall.

Ruth Bennett Hobson

Ruth Bennett Hobson was born in Logan, W.Va. on May 18, 1917 and went to her Lord and Savior on March 18, 2013. She grew up in Birmingham, Ala. where she was an active member of South Highland Presbyterian Church.  She served as an Elder, Sunday school and Bible study teacher. Ruth was very knowledgeable about the Bible and loved sharing her faith with her family and friends.

Her many hobbies include photography, rock collecting, jewelry making and raising and nurturing her beloved kitty cats. Ruth was loved by all and will be deeply missed but we know God has just welcomed an angel in Heaven.

Ruth lived in Charlotte over the last few years at Carmel Place in Charlotte, where she enjoyed the community. Most recently she was staying at White Oak Manor and the family wishes to thank all of her loving caregivers there.

She is survived by her sister Mary (Gus) Noojin and brother Bill Hobson, along with five nieces and nephews, as well as many beautiful great nieces and nephews.

The service will be held at Forest Lawn Cemetery in Lincolnton on Sunday, March 24, 2013 at 2:30 p.m. Warlick Funeral Home in Lincolnton will be handling the graveside burial service.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to South Highland Presbyterian Church,      P. O. Box 55933, Birmingham, AL  35255.

Ara Lattimore Arndt McRee

GASTONIA — Ara Lattimore Arndt McRee, 91, passed away peacefully Sunday, March 17, 2013 in Florence, S.C.

She was a native of Catawba County, born October 17, 1921 to the late Lattimore and Jurie Mull Arndt.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband of 60 years, John E. McRee; infant son, Robert Lattimore McRee; brother, Giles Arndt; and two sisters, Mary Lee Murray and Jean Williams. Ms. McRee was a member of Myers Memorial United Methodist Church, and had retired with more than 25 years from Matthews Belk Department Store.

Survivors include her sons, Richard Arndt McRee and wife Kathy of  Gastonia; John William McRee and wife Carol of Florence, S.C.;  two grandchildren, Jessica McRee of Gastonia, Nathan McRee and wife Tiffany of Charlotte; a brother, Leonard Arndt and wife Janie of Newton; and a sister, Hilda Pyatt of Salisbury.

A funeral service will be 11 a.m. Thursday, March 21, 2013 at Myers Memorial United Methodist Church with Reverend Clyde Penry and Reverend James Pyatt officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the church. Interment will follow at Maiden City Cemetery, Maiden.

Tony S. Wilson, 50, of Charlotte died on March 16, 2013.

Funeral services will be held at 12 noon, March 21, 2013 with visitation at 11 a.m. at Walls Memorial AME Zion Church, Charlotte. The body will lie in state at 3 p.m. March 21, 2013 at Mt. Vernon Baptist Church, Iron Station.

Aleine Rose Link Shipp

Aleine Rose Link Shipp, 67, of Mt. Holly died March 15, 2013.

Services will be held today at 3 p.m. at Rock Hill United Methodist Church. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the church. Interment will be in the Gold Hill/Rock Hill Cemetery.

Patsy Arlene Little Heavner, 64, of Catawba died March 17, 2013.

A memorial service will be held today at 1 p.m. at Tri-City Baptist Church. The family will receive friends today from 11:45 a.m. until 12:45 p.m. at the church prior to the service.

Thomas Patrick Kinsella Jr. of Newton died March 17, 2013.

Patricia Wayburn Darty Hord, 76, of Cherryville, formerly of Ohio, died March 18, 2013.
