Troopers: Speed excessive in fatal pole crash

Staff Writer

Troopers said a Denver man was driving 30 miles per hour over the speed limit earlier this week on a county roadway when he lost control of his vehicle, slammed into a power pole and died in Lincoln County’s first fatal wreck of 2013.

Ryan Brandon Cole, 23, was traveling east on Campground Road in Denver just after 1 a.m. Sunday when he ran off the right side of the road, overcorrected and crossed the center line, according to Trooper C.M. Casey with the North Carolina State Highway Patrol.

Cole’s Chevy Blazer proceeded to run off the left side of the roadway and down an embankment before spinning around multiple times, striking an area power pole on the vehicle’s driver’s side, Casey told the Times-News on Wednesday.

Troopers were unsure whether the driver had been drinking at the time of the incident but did note that Cole, who was wearing a seatbelt, was traveling well over the 45 mph speed limit.

Cole was a 2007 graduate of North Lincoln High School. A Celebration of Life ceremony in his memory took place Wednesday at Westshore Baptist Church in Denver.
