FRIDAY
Soccer sign-ups
Lincolnton Parks & Recreation is currently hosting sign-ups for spring soccer. Individuals may register 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekdays through Monday (Feb. 18).

Local artist’s show
Fausto Coffee in downtown Lincolnton will host work from local artist, writer, photographer and independent filmmaker Gretchen Robinson in a special event 5:30-8 p.m. called “Places and Faces,” which will highlight scenes from her travels.

Poetry Lincolnton
Poetry Lincolnton, co-sponsored by Main Street Rag Publishing, will host award-winning N.C. poet Scott Owens 7 p.m. at the Lincoln Cultural Center in Lincolnton. Owens will be reading from his newly released book Shadows Trail Them Home.
Open mic will follow the event.

SATURDAY
Church breakfast
Meadow Ridge Church, Zeb Haynes Rd. in Maiden, will host an all-you-can-eat breakfast 7-11 a.m. Cost is $6 (adults) and $3 (children). Proceeds will benefit the church building fund.

Seedling sale
The Lincoln Soil & Water Conservation District, 115 W. Main St. in Lincolnton, will hold its annual tree seedling sale 8 a.m. to noon (or until sold out) in the parking lot of the James W. Warren Citizens Center. The following seeds will be available: dogwood, live oak, crape myrtle, white pine, river birch and baldcypress.

MLK breakfast
The Coalition of Churches will host a Martin Luther King Jr., breakfast starting 8:30 a.m. at the Lincoln Cultural Center in Lincolnton with guest speaker Dr. George Creed. Following the meal, a youth program for youth and adults will take place in the upstairs area of the auditorium.
Lunch will be served for the youth.

Church giveaway
Tabernacle of Blessings Apostolic Ministries, 306 Linden St. in Lincolnton, will host a giveaway of free items 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Stew fundraiser
Crouse and Pleasant Grove UMC’s men’s groups will host a Brunswick stew fundraiser 4-7 p.m. at Crouse UMC’s fellowship hall, 3311 Crouse School Rd. in Crouse.
Donations will benefit mission projects.

Cultural Center show
The Lincoln Cultural Center in Lincolnton will feature the show the “Life and Times of Fannie Lou Hamer,” by The Touring Theatre of North Carolina, 7 p.m. in the Timken Performance Hall.

Valentine’s dinner
The Knights of Columbus Council 10389 will host a Valentine’s dinner & dance 7-11 p.m. in the Parish Activity Center of Holy Spirit Catholic Church, 537 N. N.C. 16 in Denver. Baked ziti will be served 7-8 p.m. followed by a dance, with entertainment by the 18-piece Salisbury Swing Band, 8-11 p.m.

VFW Valentine’s dance
Lincolnton VFW Post 1706 will host their 1st Annual Valentine’s Dance 8-11 p.m. at 1306 Country Club Rd. in Lincolnton. A 1950s costume contest will take place along with a performance from group “Silver Creek.” Doors open at 7 p.m. Concessions will be available.

Church luncheon
McKendree UMC, 3537 Maiden Hwy. in Lincolnton, will host a church luncheon 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. with country-fried steak and baked chicken. Donations will be accepted for missions and other projects. Take-out orders will also be available.

Blood drive
Community Blood Center of the Carolinas will host a blood drive 12-4 p.m. at Victory Baptist Church, 6041 King Wilkinson Rd. in Denver.

Book signing
The Hickory Museum of Art will host authors Jason L. Harpe, executive director of the Lincoln County Historical Association, and Brian Dedmond, along with photographer Melany Dawn Crouse, for a book signing 2-4 p.m. for their book VALLEY ABLAZE: Pottery Tradition in the Catawba Valley. The event will also feature a panel discussion and slide presentations. A social hour with refreshments will follow.

MONDAY
Living Healthy class
Lincoln County Cooperative Extension Agent Melinda Houser and Sue Brooks, of Lincoln County Senior Services, will team up to teach a free, six-week long “Living Healthy” workshop for people with chronic health problems. Topics will include dealing with frustration, fatigue and pain, appropriate use of medications, exercising and nutrition, among others. The first class will be 11 a.m. today at the James W. Warren Citizens Center in Lincolnton. Participants will receive training materials and lunch.

CMC-Lincoln will host “Keeping on Track with Diabetes” 6 p.m. at the Sally’s YMCA in Denver. The discussion is part of Heart Awareness Month.

Lions Club
The Lincolnton Lions Club will host Ken Bradley, writer for Sporting News, as the meeting’s guest speaker 7 p.m. in the Elm Classroom of CMC-Lincoln’s Medical Plaza in Lincolnton. Bradley will speak on upcoming college basketball tournaments, and all club members and guests are encouraged to wear paraphernalia featuring their favorite teams. Anyone planning to eat in the CMC-Lincoln cafeteria should arrive 30 min. prior to the meeting.

Widowed Group
Widowed Group of the Greater Gaston Area will host a Gospel music event with Marty Vanderloop 6:30-7:30 p.m. at the Gaston County Parks & Rec. Center, 1303 Dallas-Cherryville Hwy. in Dallas. Doors will open at 6 p.m. Refreshments will be served following the program.
