Ronald and Sharon Ashmore may soon be $15,000 richer for photographing a sandwich.

The pair, who live in southeastern Lincoln County, took a picture of two of their three grandchildren eating a Smucker’s Uncrustables sandwich this past summer on their boat on Lake Norman and entered the photo into the company’s “Uncrustables Unstoppable Family Photo Contest,” they told the Times-News.

“We saw this contest, and it involved a family that eats the Uncrustables sandwich,” Sharon said, “and of course we do. We have grandkids and eat them a lot.”

The nationwide contest also required that each picture include a brief write-up; the Ashmores submitted the question, “Which brother is going to get the last Uncrustables?”

About a month-and-a-half ago, the couple received the shocking news that their photo was among the contest’s top 10 finalists.

“We were very surprised,” Sharon said.

However, the photo now needs community support in order to win the lucrative grand prize. Each week, the Smucker’s contest website allows individuals to vote on their favorite picture, and each person can cast multiple votes, the couple said.

Some of the additional competitors stem from Connecticut, Texas, Arizona, South Carolina, California and Hawaii.

Voters also have the opportunity to win prizes, including of course a box of Uncrustables, the same treat that will be awarded to all non-winning finalists.

Voting, which started in late January, ends March 6; the grand prize winner will be announced April 8, according to the contest website.

“I hope it’s us,” Sharon said. “Vote, vote, vote.”
