A vehicle struck and killed a 25-year-old Georgia man who was walking in a roadway Tuesday morning near the Lincoln / Catawba County line, troopers with The North Carolina State Highway Patrol said.

The incident occurred just after 5:30 a.m. near 4149 Biggerstaff Road in central Lincoln County near the Catawba line, according to Kim Green, public information officer with Lincoln County Emergency Medical Services.

Upon arrival, crews treated Donald Tilley, of Fortson, Ga., and rushed him to Carolinas Medical Center-Lincoln. However, Trooper C. M. Casey said the man was pronounced dead at the hospital.

No charges have been filed against 42-year-old Maiden resident Johnny Jenkins, the driver of the vehicle that struck Tilley, Casey said.

Jenkins, who suffered no injuries, told troopers he was on his way to work when the incident occurred.

Tilley had been in town visiting his cousin, Casey said.

Trooper J. Crouse worked the scene.
