East Lincoln junior Charlie Hills and freshman Chazz Surratt combined for 43 points but the Mustangs’s boys varsity basketball team fell to the sixth-place Cherryville Ironmen 93-88 on Tuesday.
The Ironmen led 21-17 at the end of the first quarter but the Mustangs outscored Cherryville 23-20 to go into the halftime break facing a 41-40 deficit.
Cherryville (11-10, 5-6 Southern Piedmont 1A/2A Conference) outpaced East Lincoln (14-6, 7-4) in the last two quarters, outscoring the Mustangs 28-26 in the third and 24-22 in the fourth.
Junior Domonique Smith was the only other East Lincoln player who scored in double digits with 13 points. Surratt scored 22 points and Hills added 21.
Cherryville placed five players in double digits — Kenny Poston (23 points), Rhyer Davis (17 points), Brandon Warren (16 points), Spencer Stamey (12 points) and Nick Corbett (10 points).
East Lincoln hosts the Lincolnton Wolves on Friday. Cherryville hosts Bessemer City.
