Betty Joe Moody Gilbert

Mrs. Betty Joe Moody Gilbert, age 65, of 3817 Plateau Road, Newton died Sunday, February 3, 2012.

A memorial service will be held at 7 p.m. Tuesday, February 5, 2013 in the Warlick Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Charles Ingle officiating. The family will receive friends from 5 p.m. until 6:45 p.m. Tuesday, February 5, 2013 prior to the service at Warlick Funeral Home.

Mrs. Gilbert was born in Lincoln County and was the daughter of the late Harris and Annie Lee Simpson Moody.  She worked in the textile industry.

Mrs. Gilbert is survived by her husband, Roger Dale Gilbert of the home; two sons, Joey Moody and wife, Tammie, of Vale and Robbie Moody and wife, Sandy of Vale; two brothers, Dwight Moody of Cherryville and Bobby Moody of Lincolnton; four sisters, Mary Poole of Lincolnton, Elizabeth Yount of Crouse, Veda Mae McMillian of Gastonia and Frances Glenn of Lincolnton; three grandchildren, Jacob Moody, Jordan Moody and Jaqson Moody and numerous nieces and nephews.

Nancy Hart Shrum

Mrs. Nancy Hart Shrum, age 78, of 1357 Beal Road, Lincolnton died Saturday, February 2, 2013.

Her funeral will be 3 p.m. today at McKendree United Methodist Church with Rev. Tommy Conder officiating. Burial will follow in Forest Lawn Cemetery in Lincolnton. The family will receive friends from 1 p.m. until 2:45 p.m. today prior to the funeral at McKendree United Methodist Church.

Mrs. Shrum was born on February 2, 1935 in Gaston County and was the daughter of the late Robert Sam and Jessie Harris Hart.  She was the owner of Nancy’s Family Hair Care.

Mrs. Shrum is survived by her husband, Byron G. Shrum of the home; one son, Byron G. Shrum Jr. of Denver; four daughters, Debbie S. Boyles and husband, Mike of Lincolnton, Ronda S. Mullen and husband, Scott of Lincolnton, Sue S. Stamey of Lincolnton and Judy S. Thompson and husband, Robby of Lincolnton; one brother, Richard Hart of Iron Station; seven grandchildren, Jaime Honbaier, Lindsey Huffman, Alex Mullen, Drew Mullen, Jeremi Stamey, Wesley Thompson, Olivia Thompson; three great grandchildren, Riley Honbaier, Charlotte Huffman and Jaxon Stamey.

Myrtle Woody Mitchell

Myrtle Woody Mitchell, 84, of Lincolnton died February 2, 2013 at the Palliative Care Center & Hospice of Catawba Valley. She was born in Premier, West Va.; daughter of the late Harrison and Annie Underwood Woody; and was preceded in death by four sons, John Mitchell Jr., Jessie Mitchell, Homer Mitchell, and Larry Dean Mitchell; four sisters, Georgia Hankins, Flossie Hicks, Dossie Hicks, and Rosie Blackley, and four brothers, Blaine, Junior, Thomas, and Jeff Woody.

Survivors include two sons, Lawrence Mitchell of Lincolnton, Andy Mitchell of Denver; five daughters, Brenda Forbes of Catawba, Vicky Chrisco of Lincolnton, Sherry Holt of Maiden, Michelle Brown of Gastonia, Tammy Shelton of Vale; two sister,s Loretta Collins of Bremfield, Ind., Pauline Hartsell of Mt Holly; 38 grandchildren; 65 great grandchildren, and 15 great-great grandchildren.

The funeral service conducted by Reverend Dale Hendricks will be held 2 p.m. Wednesday, February 6, 2013 in the Woodlawn Chapel of Woodlawn Funeral Home in Mt Holly. Interment will follow in Hillcrest Gardens. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 7 p.m. until 9 p.m. Tuesday, February 5, 2013.

Debbie Cook

June 18, 1955 – January 31, 2013

VALE — Mrs. Debra “Debbie” Jean Shull Cook, 57, of 2873 Peeler Road, Vale passed Thursday, January 31, 2013 at Wake Forest Baptist Hospital in Winston-Salem.

Born in Catawba County, she is a daughter of Jerry and Gladys Shull.  Mrs. Cook was valedictorian of Fred T. Foard High School in 1973.  She continued her education at Lenoir-Rhyne College where she received her BA Degree in Education. Retiring as a public school teacher, she enjoyed her years in the classrooms at Union Elementary, Banoak Elementary and S. Ray Lowder Elementary.  A teacher loved by her students, Mrs. Cook received the Catawba County Teacher of the Year Award.  She was a faithful member of Zion Hill Baptist Church where she has played the piano for the past thirteen years, was a member of the choir, and taught the Young Adults Discipleship Class.

An avid Tarheel fan, she was a lover of reading and flowers. Her family was the light of her life and she always thought of others before herself.  She loved family get-togethers and trips to the mountains.

In addition to her parents, Jerry Dale Shull and Gladys Lutz Shull of Vale, she is survived by her loving husband of thirty-nine years, Ralph Allen Cook; son and daughter-in-law, Wesley and Sabrina Cook of Hickory; daughter and son-in-law, Whitney and Travis Woodward of Vale; brothers and their wives, Keith and Debbie Shull of Hickory and Randall and Vanessa Shull of Conover; sister and her husband, Kim and Randy Bowen of Claremont; brother-in-law and wife, Cecil and Linda Cook of Vale and sister-in-law and husband, Linda and Phil Bryson of Kings Mountain; precious grandchildren of “Mimi’s,” Brooke and Madison Woodward and Josephine Cook; nieces and nephews, Adam Shull, Holly Chapman, Kyle Efird, Abbey Shull, Greg Cook, Scottie Cook, Lee Dixon and Paula Moss.

The family received friends from 5 p.m. until 7:30 p.m., Saturday, January 2, 2013 at Stamey Funeral Home, Fallston. The funeral was 3 p.m. Sunday, January 4, 2013 at Zion Hill Baptist Church with Rev. Allan Barlow officiating. The body was placed in the church thirty minutes prior to the service. Burial follow in the church cemetery.

Jack Spencer Wombough

Jack Spencer Wombough, 23, passed away on January 30, 2013 in Charlotte. He was born June 18, 1989 in Laurel, Md., son of William and Janice Spencer Wombough.

A graveside service was held at 2 p.m. Saturday, February 2, 2013 at Pisgah ARP Church in Gastonia, officiated by Pastor Eric Reece. Interment was at Pisgah ARP Church Cemetery. The family received friends from 12:30 p.m. until 1:30 p.m. Saturday at Greene Funeral Service, West Chapel, 216 Archie Whitesides Rd. Gastonia, 28052.

Jack is survived by: his father and mother; maternal grandmother, Juanita Spencer; maternal grandfather, William F. Wombough; brother, Ronald Brian Wombough; sister, Jacquelyn Ruth Wombough. Memorials may be made to the Crisis Assistance Ministry, 805 W. Airline Ave. Gastonia, NC 28052.

Phyllis Marie Whitener Sigmon, 83, of Maiden died February 1, 2013.

A funeral service will be held February 5, 2013 at 3 p.m. at St. Mark’s Lutheran Church, Claremont. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends February 5, 2013 from 1:30 p.m. until 2:45 p.m. at St. Mark’s Lutheran Church Family Life Center prior to the service.
