LINCOLNTON — The Lincolnton Wolves boys varsity basketball team might not have expected a serious challenge when they faced a West Lincoln Rebels team that is winless in Southern Piedmont Conference play with eight games left in the regular season on Friday.
The Rebels (2-12, 0-6) took a 73-55 loss, but led 14-11 after the first quarter, trailed by only 10 points at halftime and outscored the Wolves in both the first and fourth quarters.
Lincolnton senior Alonzo Mobley scored 23 points as the only Lincolnton player to score in double figures. West Lincoln senior Brett Huff scored 13 points, sophomore Daniel Schesny added 12 points and senior Alec Bruning scored 10 points.
Mobley hit a field goal with 5:25 left in the first quarter to give Lincolnton (7-7, 3-3) a 5-4 lead but Huff made a 3-pointer to put the Rebels on top 7-5 with just over four minutes left in the period. Lincolnton’s D.J. Cunningham made a layup moments later to knot the game at 7-7 and Mobley hit a one-handed floater to give Lincolnton a 9-7 lead. Quinlyn Harris added a layup to give Lincolnton an 11-7 lead but the Rebels went on a 7-0 run to close out the period and take a 14-11 lead.
Huff made a second 3-pointer with just under two minutes left in the first quarter and Schesny added a layup and then executed a steal and a layup on the inbound pass to put the Rebels on top.
The Wolves held West Lincoln to nine second-quarter points and scored 22 points to take a 33-23 halftime lead. Mobley completed a 3-point play to open the second quarter and tie the game at 14-14 and banked in a layup a minute later to put the Wolves ahead 16-14.
West Lincoln freshman Dylan Frady made a 3-pointer from the top of the key to knot the game at 21-21 with 3:41 left before halftime but that touched off a 7-0 run for the Wolves that gave them a 28-21 lead that they did not relinquish.
The Wolves outscored the Rebels 24-10 in the third quarter to take a 57-33 lead into the final period. Lincolnton started off the third quarter with a 6-0 run to take a 39-23 lead and went on a 10-0 run midway through the frame to take a 55-30 lead.
The Rebels outscored Lincolnton 22-16 in the fourth quarter. Bruning hit a 3-pointer with 15 seconds left in the game for the final margin.
