A Lincolnton man and former music director at a Cherryville church will appear in a Lincoln County Superior courtroom today on accusations he was involved in a sex-related incident with a teen girl nearly a decade ago.

Brandon James Carter, 33, of 4294 Royal Oaks Drive, will appear on charges of statutory rape and indecent liberties with a child, according to the Clerk of Court’s Office.

Deputies arrested him in March, and he was later released on a $25,000 secured bond, the Sheriff’s Office said.

Carter’s accused of raping a 13-year-old girl, whom he knew, in 2004 at a Lincoln County residence, the Times-News previously reported.

According to a Mt. Zion Baptist Church employee, Carter remains a member of the congregation but resigned from the church music position in 2011. Deputies said he was also not employed at the worship center at the time of the alleged incident.
