DALLAS — The Lincolnton Lady Wolves girls varsity basketball team picked up a 50-38 win over the North Gaston Lady Wildcats in their final regular-season nonconference game on Wednesday.
The Lady Wolves faced an 8-7 deficit at the end of the first quarter and were behind 22-21 at halftime before holding North Gaston to only two third-quarter points to seal the game and take a 35-24 lead into the final period.
Lincolnton outpaced North Gaston 15-14 in the fourth quarter.
Lincolnton’s Treasure Avery and Alexis Killian both scored a game-high 16 points. Bridget Derr added 10 points, with six in the fourth quarter. North Gaston’s Janay Polk led the team with 10 points, all which came in the fourth quarter.
North Gaston scored its two points in the third quarter on a layup by Kendal Cloninger with 3:36 left in the period. Killian opened the third quarter for Lincolnton with a 3-pointer, followed by a 3-pointer from Nadia Byers (five points).
Killian made four free throws, Avery contributed a 3-pointer and Angelica Wilson made a free throw to round out Lincolnton’s scoring in the third quarter.
The Lady Wolves doubled their points total in the first quarter with a 14-point second quarter. The Lady Wildcats opened the second period with a 7-0 run that was snapped when Killian hit a 3-pointer with 4:42 left before halftime. Avery made a pair of free throws with three minutes left and Derr banked in a shot after grabbing an offensive board with 2:30 left.
Avery hit an easy layup after snagging a steal to cut North Gaston’s lead to 19-16 with two minutes left before halftime. Derr touched off a 5-0 run for Lincolnton with a layup off an assist from Avery with 1:30 left. Avery made a 3-pointer with 50 seconds left in the first half to make North Gaston’s lead 22-21 at the break.
Lincolnton had its best offensive effort of the night with a 15-point fourth quarter. North Gaston opened the frame with a 7-0 run that Killian broke with a free throw with five minutes left in the game.
Lincolnton outscored the Lady Wildcats 14-7 in the final five minutes of the game.
