Bandy Augusta Herman Sr.

WILSON — Bandy Augusta Herman Sr., 91, died Saturday, December 29, 2012.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, January 1, 2013 at 1 p.m. at First United Methodist Church, followed by a time of visiting and sharing. Interment, will be today at 1 p.m. at St. Matthews United Church of Christ, Maiden.

Surviving is his wife of 64 years, Sara Hunsucker Herman; daughters, Cathe Dixon (Tommy) of Raleigh and Carol Cowherd (Andy) of Summit, N.J.; son, Bandy A. Herman Jr. (Sandy) of Morehead City; grandchildren, Christina and Ali Dixon of Raleigh, Sarah Cowherd of Nantucket, Mass., Grant Cowherd and Kate Herman of New York, N.Y.; sister, Verna Lou Hovis of Lincolnton,; brother, Earl Herman (Edna) of Bessemer City; many nieces and nephews and friends spanning multiple generations.

Born in Maiden (Catawba County), he attended Wingate College and Appalachian State University. He served in the Army Air Corp in Europe in World War II and rose to the rank of Master Sergeant. As a crew member of a B-17, his plane was shot down over Germany in 1943 and he was a Prisoner of War for 22 months in Austria. He received the Purple Heart for his service. For many years he was active in a POW support group including his role as Commander at the regional level. He moved to Wilson in 1951 and enjoyed a long and successful career in industrial supply sales.

Rachel Elmore Brackett

Rachel Elmore Brackett, age 81, of 2610 Brookwood Road in Lincolnton, died on Monday, December 31, 2012.

A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. on Thursday, January 3, 2013 at Forest Lawn Cemetery with Rev. Dale Justice officiating.  The family will receive friends from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. this evening atWarlick Funeral Home.

Mrs. Brackett was born August 18, 1931 in Lincoln County to the late Arthur Henry and Yula Canipe Elmore.  In addition to her parents, she was also preceded in death by her husband, William Douglas Brackett.  She worked in textiles.

She is survived by a son, William Timothy Brackett; a daughter, Brenda Brackett Rippy and husband Sheldon Wineberg; a sister, Willie Mae Murphy of Lincolnton; five grandchildren, Tammy Aderhold and husband Michael, David Douglas Scronce and wife Kelly, Christopher “Heath” Rippy and fiancé April Wellman, Tyona Brackett, and Timothy Shane Brackett and wife Trisha; and five great-grandchildren, Taz Scronce, Gage Scronce, Bo Rippy, Lucas Howell, and Sayler Brackett.

Martha Mauney Teeter

Martha Mauney (Boyd) Teeter, 95, of Columbus, MS, formerly of Lincolnton, died peacefully on December 29, 2012 at Trinity Healthcare Center in Columbus, MS.  Born May 31, 1917 in Maiden, she is predeceased by her parents, Garland E. and Ethel Fern Mauney of Maiden; four brothers, Edgar (Mary), Glen (Eunice), Frank (Mary Louise), and Don Mauney; and one sister, Edith Taylor.  She is also predeceased by her husbands, Willard Gaither Boyd Sr. of Lincolnton and Robert Henry Teeter of Lincolnton.

Martha was a Department Store Clerk in Lincolnton and Winston-Salem during her early years, and was a homemaker at her homes in Winston-Salem and Lincolnton where she enjoyed her sun-porch flowers, traveling, attending musical concerts, birthday parties, and eating out. She often drove her car to Mississippi to visit family in her later years, until she stopped driving.  She was an assisted-care resident at Boger City Rest Home and Arrington Assisted Living (MS) for several years before transferring to Methodist Senior Services – Trinity Healthcare Center (MS).  She was a member of Emmanuel Lutheran Church, Lincolnton; and attended Emmanuel until her health failed.

Survivors include one son, (Bill) Willard Gaither (Sandra) Boyd Jr., of Starkville, MS; three granddaughters, Susan Holland, Melanie (Shawn) Kelly, and Amanda (Josh) Hall; and two grandsons, Mark (Shanan) Boyd and Randy Boyd. Martha is survived by nine great-grandchildren, Chelsey Holland, Danielle Hollingsworth, Andrew Boyd, Morgan Boyd, Taylor Boyd, Dylan Boyd, Gracie Kelly, Mallory Kelly, and Ainslee Boyd.  Martha is also survived by three nieces of NC, Margaret Tabb, Harriet Lehman, and Glenda Smyre.

Funeral services will be held at Emmanuel Lutheran Church, Lincolnton on Friday, January 4, 2013 at 2 p.m.  The family will receive friends in the North Wing of Emmanuel Lutheran Church from 1 p.m. until 1:45 p.m. prior to the funeral service.  Burial will follow at St. James Lutheran Church Cemetery, Catawba County.

Karroll ‘Buster’ Dean Haynes

Mr. Karroll “Buster” Dean Haynes, age 73, of 1067 Point View Lane in Lincolnton, died on Monday, December 31, 2012.

His funeral service will be 2 p.m. on Friday, January 4, 2013 in theWarlick Funeral HomeChapel with Rev. Tim Spencer officiating.  Burial will follow in Forest Lawn Cemetery with DAV graveside rites. The family will receive friends from 7 p.m. until 8:30 p.m. on Thursday, January 3, 2013 atWarlick Funeral Home.

Mr. Haynes was born June 30, 1939 in Lincoln County to the late James Franklin and Ellaree Violet Mahaley Haynes.  In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by his wife, Doris Freeman Haynes; brothers, Eddie Haynes and David Haynes; and sister Sally Haynes Lane.  He worked as a mechanic.

He is survived by a daughter, Angel Martin of Lincolnton; two brothers, Jimmy Haynes and Pete Haynes, both of Lincolnton; one sister, Barbara H. Ward of Lincolnton; and a granddaughter, Ambreal Watson.

Joseph ‘Joe’ Alexander Woodie

Joseph “Joe” Alexander Woodie, age 70, a resident of Lincolnton went to be with the Lord on Sunday, December 30, 2012.

Born in Lincoln County, son of the late Odie and Selma Woodie and was also preceded in death a brother, Reese Woodie.

A member of Anthony Grove Baptist Church, Crouse, he loved his church and was a member of the Barnabas Class and loved to read his Bible every day. He also loved the ocean and fishing and was a loving husband, father and grandfather and great grandfather. He retired as a truck driver from Carolina Mills.

Survivors include his wife of 49 years, Shirley Woodie; son, Joseph “Joey” Alexander Woodie Jr. of Lincolnton; brothers, Harley Woodie, of Hickory and Goldie Woodie of S.C.; grandchildren, Ashley Michelle Rudisill and husband Rocky, and Rebecca Marie Woodie,  both of Lincolnton; and a great grandchild, Ava Grace Rudisill.

A memorial service will be held at Anthony Grove Baptist Church on Friday, January 4, 2013 at 6 p.m. with Rev. Dennis Bean and Rev. Ken Faulkenbury officiating. Visitation will be held from 4:30 p.m. until 5:30 p.m. prior to the service at Anthony Grove Baptist Church.

Kathy Ballard McLawhorn

Kathy Ballard McLawhorn, 54, of Denver went to be with the Lord on December 29, 2012 at the Levine & Dickson Hospice House. She was born on May 10, 1958 to the late William and Joyce Ballard.

Survivors include her husband Charles McLawhorn; daughters, Anna Craig and husband David, and Ashley McLawhorn, and son Wes McLawhorn, all of Denver. Her brother Phil Ballard preceded her in death.

A funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, January 5, 2013 at Denver United Methodist Church. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Visitation will be held from 11:30 a.m. until 1 p.m. prior to the service at the church.

Betty Faye Lynch Mosteller

Betty Faye Lynch Mosteller, age 80, of 1421 High Shoals Road in Lincolnton, died on Tuesday, January 1, 2013.

Her funeral service will be 2 p.m. on January 4, 2013 at Landers Chapel United Methodist Church with the body to lie in state for thirty minutes prior to the service. Rev. Frank Herman will officiate.  Burial will follow in the church cemetery.  The family will receive friends from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. on Thursday, January 3, 2013 atWarlick Funeral Home.

Mrs. Mosteller was born March 12, 1932 in Gaston County to the late Polie A. and Annie Mae Alexander Lynch.   In addition to her parents, she was also preceded in death by her husband, Howard “Pete” Mosteller; two sisters, Margaret Quinn and Louise Lynch; and brother, Glenn Lynch.  She worked as a lab technician at Threads, USA. Mrs. Mosteller was a lifelong member of Landers Chapel United Methodist Church.

She is survived by three daughters, Suzanne Reynolds and husband Jimmy, Janet Lyda and husband Bill, and LuEllen Norman and husband Rick, all of Lincolnton; one sister, Edith Varalli; six grandchildren, Allison Lyda Shortmeyer, Keely Lyda Wise, Christian Reynolds, Ashley Schronce Jarvis, Amy Reynolds Wilson, and Aaron Schronce; and six great-grandchildren, Madison, Larsyn, and Anderson Wise, Lilly Kate, Ellie, and Lanee Shortmeyer.

Cathy Holt Leonhardt, 61, of Cherryville died December 30, 2012.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. January 3, 2013 at Cone Memorial Chapel of Carpenter’s Funeral Home. Burial in will be in City Memorial Cemetery following the service.  The family will receive friends from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. this evening at the funeral home.

Sarah Foster “Baby” Harris, 91, of Cherryville died December 29, 2012.

Funeral services will be held January 3, 2013 at 3 p.m. at Zion Hill Baptist Church with burial to follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the church.
