Mrs. Mary Lucille Miller Hedrick, 93, of Sharon School Road, Statesville, entered the arms of the Lord on Saturday morning, December 22, 2012 at Catawba County Hospice House, Newton, surrounded by her loving family.
Lucille was born on October 30, 1919 in Iredell County and was the daughter of the late Charlie Roscoe Miller and Lola Vernada Deal Miller. On May 5, 1946 she was married to Robert Glenn “Ike” Hedrick, who died January 17, 1991.
Lucille spent most of her life in Iredell County, graduating as valedictorian of her class at Sharon High School and completing business courses at Mitchell Community College. During World War II, she lived in Burlington and worked for Fairchild Aircraft. In later years, she was a rental agent for Reich Realty Company of Statesville and worked for the FCX and Dixie Liberty Farm and Garden stores where her mathematical mind and knowledge of farming procedures and products made her a valuable asset.
As a lifelong member of Sharon Lutheran Church, she served in many capacities; Sunday School and Bible School teacher, singing in the choir, on the church council and as church treasurer well into her ninth decade. Homecoming each August was one of her favorite events and she spent hours contacting former pastors and members and friends in the community inviting them to attend. New residents in the community frequently received a visit and an invitation to services at Sharon Church. Meals at church were not complete without her pot of “hot slaw.” If an event was happening at Sharon, she was there!
As a “senior citizen,” she was proud to be able to take care of her own yard, till her garden with the tiller and harvest, can and freeze abundant produce. Nothing was allowed to go to waste, if she couldn’t use it all, she found someone to share it with. Having played basketball in high school, she maintained that passion and looked forward to watching college games on TV in the winter months. Many items in her home reflected her talent as a seamstress and quilter-curtains, cloths, slipcovers, she could do it all. She spent many hours at bedsides helping to care for friends and family who were hospitalized or in nursing home, caring for both her mother and sister Polly Krider in her home as their health declined.
For the past two years, she has resided in the Assisted Living Community at Lutheran Home, Hickory. While there, she enjoyed Chaplains Circle (Sunday school), The Read (book club), bingo, lima bean auctions and almost any event in the Chapel.
In addition to her parents she was also preceded in death by her husband, Robert Glenn “Ike” Hedrick; sisters, Winnie Sipes, Betty Sherrill and Polly Krider; and brothers, Huitte Miller, John Perry (Pete) Miller, and Fred Miller.
She is survived by one daughter, Beth Sain and husband Larry of Vale; and two grandsons, Andrew Sain and wife Erin of Lincolnton and Jason Sain and fiancée Melissa Wright and her daughter, Adisson of Dallas, N.C.
A memorial funeral service will be conducted 3 p.m. Sunday, December 30, 2012 at Sharon Lutheran Church with Rev. John Locke and Rev. Darrell Norris officiating. The family will visit with friends following the service.
