Suspect accused of scamming Vale family

Staff Writer

Lincoln County deputies recently arrested a Randolph County man accused of scamming a Vale family out of money by telling them he worked construction jobs for the state, the Sheriff’s Office said.
Deputies charged Tommy Mack Small Jr., 32, of 1011 Shamrock Road in Asheboro, with one felony count of obtaining property by false pretenses and one count of misdemeanor larceny.
The scammer told the Alf Hoover Road residents on Friday he had extra gravel from a job site and could pour it on their driveway, an agency press release said.
Small took $100 from the home after he asked the residents to move their vehicles out of the property’s driveway, the release said.
Deputies said residents told them that the man had earlier spotted the family getting money from an inside cabinet.
Detective Matt Burgess tracked down Small’s vehicle along a nearby roadway after the suspect left the home with the excuse he needed additional equipment for the job, the release said.
The family had contacted 911 after they grew curious about Small.
One of the victims responded to the scene and identified the man, the Sheriff’s Office said.
Small has since posted a $2,500 secured bond.
