NEWTON — The East Lincoln Lady Mustangs varsity basketball team took a 77-21 loss against the Newton-Conover Lady Red Devils in the Mustangs’ season opener on Tuesday.
Ashlee Frazier led East Lincoln on offense with 10 points. Hanna Moolenaar added four points for the Lady Mustangs.
Frazier put the Lady Mustangs on top 2-0 after driving toward the basket for a layup early in the game, but East Lincoln didn’t score again until Frazier drained a short-range jumper with 30 seconds left in the first period. During the meantime the Red Devils went on a 10-0 run and exited the first quarter with a 10-6 lead.
Newton-Conover broke the game open in the second quarter, outscoring East Lincoln 25-5. Rachel Lane opened the second quarter with a two-point jumper to pull East Lincoln within two points of the Lady Red Devils, 10-8, but a 12-0 run gave Newton-Conover a comfortable lead.
Teanna Anderson got East Lincoln back on the board with a putback with just over two minutes left in the first half.
Newton-Conover opened the third quarter with a 15-0 run that was snapped when Alyssa Fuller made one of her two free throw attempts.
Frazier posted five points in the fourth quarter, adding a layup midway through the period and sinking a 3-pointer with a minute left to play.
Moolenaar and Katie Crunden added two points each for East Lincoln in the final minutes of the fourth quarter.
The Lady Mustangs (0-1) resume play today when they host South Point in their home opener for a nonconference game.
