VALE — The West Lincoln Lady Rebels varsity basketball team took the tipoff of their season opener against the Draughn Lady Wildcats down the court and scored on a layup by senior Brittany Ormand for a 2-0 lead less than 10 seconds into the game.
The Lady Rebels held a lead once more, three minutes later, but finished with a 53-40 loss in nonconference play to start the season.
Ormand and 6-foot-1 sophomore Madison Ferguson both scored eight points to lead the Lady Rebels. Sophomore Amanda Ritch scored five points and Taylor Upton, Rebecca Owens and Erin Huff added four points each.
Early in the game West Lincoln junior Ashton Bruning had a collision with a Draughn player near the baseline when the Lady Wildcats were on a fast break. She was immobile on the floor for several minutes as she was attended to by the West Lincoln staff, and was taken away from the game on a stretcher and was airlifted to a hospital in Charlotte. News of her condition was not available at press time.
Draughn went on a 10-0 run in the final three minutes of the first quarter to take an 18-7 lead out of the first frame.
The Lady Rebels closed the gap to 18-14 in the opening minutes of the second quarter with a 7-0 run that included field goals from Ferguson, Upton and Owens. Draughn dominated the final minutes before halftime, outscoring the Lady Rebels 11-3 to take a 29-17 lead at halftime.
West Lincoln took the third-quarter score to 33-28 with five unanswered points with less than two minutes remaining in the quarter, but Draughn connected for five points of its own for a 38-28 lead before the final quarter.
Draughn outscored West Lincoln 15-12 in the fourth quarter, never allowing the Lady Rebels within 10 points in the final six minutes of the game, to take the win.
