A vehicle struck and killed a 48-year-old man while he was crossing a Lincolnton intersection over the weekend, according to officials with Emergency Medical Services.

The incident occurred just after 8 p.m. Sunday at the corner of S. Generals Boulevard and S. Laurel Street, Public Information Officer Kim Green told the Times-News.

Johnny Carpenter, of 354 Victory Grove Church Road in Lincolnton, was crossing the dark intersection when Jacqulen Leonhardt, 67, of Arden Drive in Lincolnton, struck the man with her vehicle, Lincolnton Police Chief Rodney Jordan said.

EMS crews located Carpenter lying in the roadway with significant injuries. While the man initially maintained a heartbeat and blood pressure, he quickly went into cardiac arrest and was transported to Carolinas Medical Center-Lincoln with life-threatening conditions, Green said. The man later died from his injuries.

The driver, who had a green light at the time of the incident, according to the wreck report, has not been charged, Jordan said.
