The East Lincoln Lady Mustangs golf team finished as the Southern Piedmont Conference runner up after the final regular-season match held Monday at Lincolnton Country Club.
East Lincoln’s Brittany Smith was named Player of the Year and East Lincoln coach Chip Ashley took Coach of the Year honors. Smith was the match medalist on Monday with a score of 38, and finished with the lowest regular-season score in the conference at 198.
“She has worked really hard over the last few years to turn herself into a very good golfer,” Ashley said. “She did what she needed to do — she takes lessons and she plays in tournaments, so she’s out on the course a lot. I’m always pleased when somebody works hard and they’re rewarded for it.”
Lake Norman Charter’s Maegan Ports, who was only one shot behind Smith before Monday’s match, finished the season with a score of 203.
The Lady Mustangs finished the regular season as a team with a point total of 919. Lake Norman Charter’s 829 points led the conference.
Smith, junior Taylor Johnson and sophomore Brenna Loendorf will represent East Lincoln at the 2A West Regional Meet at Meadowbrook golf course in Rutherfordton on Tuesday. The team missed the state meet by four shots last year.
Ashley said a big boost to the team this year was Loendorf’s contributions.
“She really improved from her freshman year to her sophomore year,” he said. “She’s become a much more consistent and reliable golfer for us this year.”
Ashley, in his second year as East Lincoln women’s golf head coach, said he was honored that the SPC coaches awarded him his first women’s golf Coach of the Year award.
“I count it as a real honor that they chose me,” he said. “All of the coaches really get along well.”
North Lincoln’s Margo Lovelace and Lincolnton’s Alexis Killian were named All-Conference.
