Joe Lake Collins
GASTONIA — Joe Lake Collins, 61, of Gastonia died peacefully Tuesday morning October 9, 2012 at Carolinas Medical Center with his loving fiancée, Denise Carpenter by his side. Joe was born in Augusta, Ga. on February 22, 1951, he was the eldest son of George Elwyn Collins Sr. and the late Margaret Chapman Collins. He is survived by his fiancée of 18 years, Denise Carpenter; daughter, Meredith Collins McCorkle and husband, Andy; granddaughter, Rori McCorkle; son, Evan Carpenter and girlfriend, Jessica Heath; father, George E. Collins Sr.; brother, George E. “Buddy” Collins Jr. and wife, Beth; nephew, Josh Collins, his wife Melissa and son, Banks Collins; niece, Courtney Collins Lee, her husband Clark and son Lake Lee; and his mother-in-law to be Bobbie Mauney; along with an extended family and host of many friends.
Visitation for Mr. Collins will be Sunday, October 14, 2012 at McLean Funeral Home, 700 S. New Hope Road, Gastonia from 1 p.m. until 2:30 p.m. followed by his funeral at 3 p.m.
Joe was a member of the Gastonia Masonic Lodge #369 A.F. & A.M.

Mabel Burton Hedgepeth
Mabel Burton Hedgepeth, age 74, of Cardinal Health Care and formerly of 3052 Ramseur Street in Lincolnton, died on Tuesday, October 9, 2012.
Her funeral service will be 11 a.m. today at Salem Baptist Church with Rev. Dr. Andy Royals officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The body will lie in state thirty minutes prior to the service. Visitation was held from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. on Thursday, October 11, 2012 at Salem Baptist Church.
Mrs. Hedgepeth was born August 20, 1938 in Gaston County to the late Archie Lee and Susan Bridges Burton. She worked in textiles.
She is survived by her husband, Carl F. Hedgepeth of the home; two sons, Donald Carl Hedgepeth of Lincolnton and Richard Allen Hedgepeth of Maiden; one daughter, Lori Ann Johnson of Lincolnton; six grandchildren; and eleven great-grandchildren.

James Avery Hedgpeth
Mr. James Avery Hedgpeth, age 68, of 154 Rash Road in Lincolnton, died on Thursday, October 11, 2012.
A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. on Saturday, October 13, 2012 at Anthony Grove Baptist Church with Rev. Ken Faulkenbury and Rev. Dennis Bean officiating. The family will receive friends from 1 p.m. until 3 p.m. prior to the service at the church.
Mr. Hedgpeth was born January 23, 1944 in Lincoln County to the late Burlin A. and Pearlie Mae Carpenter Hedgpeth. He was a well driller.
He is survived by his wife, Mary Haynes Hedgpeth of the home; three sons, James P. Hedgpeth of Cherryville, John R. Hedgpeth of Lincolnton, and Lee Hedgpeth of Bessemer City; three daughters, Patricia Prather of Cherryville, Brenda Boston of Crouse, and Crystal Yarbrough of Lawndale; one brother, Ronnie Hedgpeth of Lincolnton; one sister, Delthia Tilley of Cherryville; ten grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Mary Elizabeth Huss Leatherman
Mary Elizabeth Huss Leatherman, age 89, of 1064 Shoal Road in Lincolnton, died on Wednesday, October 10, 2012.
Her funeral service will be 3 p.m. on Saturday, October 13, 2012 at Bethphage Lutheran Church with Rev. Fred Mitschke officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6:30 p.m. until 8:30 p.m. on Friday, October 12, 2012 at Warlick Funeral Home.
Mrs. Leatherman was born January 1, 1923 in Lincoln County to the late Chesley and Vangie Peeler Huss. In addition to her parents, she was also preceded in death by her husband, James T. Leatherman Jr. She worked as a cook at West Lincoln Senior High School.
She is survived by two sons, James Leatherman of Crouse and Joe Leatherman of Lincolnton; one brother, Ralph Huss of Lincolnton; two grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Sara Nell Dill Beam, 88, of Cherryville died October 7, 2012.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. October 13, 2012 at Cone Memorial Chapel of Carpenter’s Funeral Home. Entombment will follow in Gaston Memorial Park, Gastonia. The family will receive friends from 12 noon until 12:45 p.m. prior to the service at the funeral home.
